I can give you some recs, since I did read Harry Potter, when I was young.
I'm not sure if you have the same tastes as me, but these are my favorite books rn that are similar with HP:
Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
His Dark Materials - Pullman
But be warned, with LOTR, it's quite slow paced compared to HP

What is it on

#61

Frags

It's romance SF kind of, basically a girl with a dream to become a valorant pro (yes, she even get on to win champs later on) get attacked by one of the biggest monsters in the world. She managed to survive the first wave of attack, but got stuck under debris. A boy save her and tell her he can kill the monster, since she knows a shit ton about magic she propulse him and he kill the monster in one blow. And then they get to know each other, discovering the other past who is really not what each expected, but they also help each other no matter what's happening, wether it's distance, being scared, trauma, curses and all.

They also meet a character with the power to control the entier informatic world later but she is cool and all but writing about that section would take up a lot of words and it just make the story way deeper :v

#126
number1_Demon1_fan
0
Frags

It does have some depth (for exemple, they go all around the globe : An island close to the UK, Korea, Sao Paulo, North Africa and America), her winning champs is pretty much a side quest and her dreams, but like from where she comes from it makes up like half of the story, and that 3rd character make the other half.
For exemple : For that 3rd Character, they need to know what happened to her and how she became like that, since she can't recall anything, and they know someone is looking for her, but they don't know who, why, when etc...

Damm kinda rare to see someone still read manhwa after getting into webnovels. Like manhwa or manhua feel mid compared to Chinese webnovels or webnovels in general. From my experience most people stop reading comics after getting into webnovels.

usually i go into a phase where i read only 1 for like 2 months, cuz I read way too fast

#72
Ryandr
0
Frags

Same, I read webnovels way too fast as well. Got bored of actual well written slow paced webnovels nowadays so I just randomly search for a particular genre and read multiple different webnovels in short span of time.

Currently I am just spam reading martial arts, comedy with wuxia elements. Probably gonna read some horror genre webnovels soon. I just waste my free time on those fast paced time pass type webnovels. And after like a couple of years I started watching anime again somehow but through reaction videos. Looks like I am suffering from adhd. I need to control myself.

#73
notapanda
0

are wuxia/xianxia/murim good as novels?
i dont try much I just read rofan or some academy shit

#74
Ryandr
0
Frags
+

Yeah the top tiers one are really good. Average one are decent too. They can have some really unique and interesting plots. Especially xianxia(immortality and high fantasy stiff) is generally considered the best genre. For example the webnovels considered the best generally are of this genre like reverend insanity or er gen works. Wuxia is more grounded basically murim. Well murim is literally based on wuxia. There is another called xuanhuan mixture of Chinese and western elements(lord of the mystery for example).

Best thing about Chinese webnovels is the diversity especially. Don't read urban life webnovels tho unless they have very very high rating since almost all of them will have some racism in them against Japan and USA especially. They can be so fun to read but the authors will ruin the story at like 500 chapters just to include racism.

#77

For the best one try shadow slave(english original webnovel), reverend insanity, lotm and er gen's novels. Otherwise try a site called wtr lab. You can filter out genres you don't like. The site is insanely good but keep in mind that many of the novels there are ai translated or web translated. Use that site to filter out webnovels maybe.
Or you can check out the site novelupdates too.

good novels nonetheless but its so far off from what i asked its not even in the ballpark.
ill see the site

#104

I thought you were asking for no harem webnovels in general so I mentioned SS and lotm. And I was lazy so just mentioned the mainstream one. Just filter out harem in advance search and you will find wuxia and xianxia novel you want. I don't really read mainstream stuff anymore so can't recommend you popular good stuff rn.

Besides the stoicism, I find Meditations kinda funny because it's literally a roman emperor talking to you about issues which you can relate to which is a wild experience.

Murakami is like a less crazy Fujimoto in some sense, which is probably why I enjoy his books to this day (although I do hate how he writes women like they're objects which is a massive red flag.)

You should 100% give The Berlin Stories and Darkness at Noon a shot, I think you will be pleasantly surprised

Yes i was confused read animal farm back then in beginning, At first I thought it's just about the failure of communism depicted through the figures of livestock, but then i just reread this book for many times, it turned out that this was much deeper, a critique of the fragility of democracy. I see it as a criticism of the democratic governments established by newly independent countries that quickly descended into totalitarianism

10k+ hours in smash bros

Is bro poppt1 or one of the underdogs

But for Lotr, i do warn you, it is extremely slow paced compared to other books, like each chapter takes 30 min to read i think, or less, depending on how fast you read.

And finally, it is indeed infuriating that he doesnt care about fiction, because its a wonderful way to relax and gain immense satisfaction (A lot more than playing val and other games), from reading.

#186

now that i think about it the "if its not real why would i care" is VERY poppt1 coded, from the couple times ive talked to poppt (perth smash scene isnt very big) they arent much alike tho

ill keep it in mind with lotr, i dont think it will make much of a difference tho because when i read its always in downtime at school which there is a lot of so i have tonnes of time

I unfortunately haven't watched underdogs nor little z recently, but I loved watching family feud, then the beer pong, the smash bros meme tournament, and a lot more, I should really start watching them again.

But on the other hand, I have been watching Misfit Minds, so ig it kinda makes up for it

i used to spam dan brown's robert langdon series back wen i was a chud and too poor for a pc, for lack of a better option of entertainment i suppose

lotr was good too (tom bombadil was the goat lol, no clue why he got cut in the movies)

Tom was cut probably because the segment would've thrown off the pacing of the movie and that it wasn't integral to the plot.
But It is indeed a shame, for:
Tom Bombadill-o, is a merry fellow,
Blue is his hat (or whatever )
Ring a doll dillo

But I understand you with being poor, I had to re-read HP and lotr multiple times because I couldn't afford other books

Fav author: David Baldacci

His books honestly make it seem like you're watching a movie, and his descriptions of the world around us, human actions and his writing in general is soooo engaging.

Some of his books I liked:

  • The Winner
  • Deception Point
  • The Target (this one was alright)

I read the hobbit when I was about 11 or 12, and while i tried to get into lotr a year or so later, it was too long and felt like a slog when I was younger, so I told myself that I would wait till I'm older. I definitely want to read lotr sometime this year.

Although I've heard a lot of good things about the book series, I've heard that the pacing is really slow, and the book is heavily inspired by J. R. R Tolkien, I don't mind that nor the book being long, but I do mind if it's really long AND similar to books I've already read, because y'know, it won't be interesting. What are your thoughts?

#216
31Raven
0
Frags
+

the pacing only gets slow at around book 8 or 9. of the 14, the first 7 are pretty well paced along with the final 2-4, but the stretch from around book 8-11 is aptly named by everyone whos read it as "the slog". nothing really happens in those books other than sum bs storylines that are because the characters were stupid, or theyre just boring. the rest of it is really good, and the slog isnt as bad as it was when they first came out (instead of waiting 4 years for nun you can just read them after another).

generally, yes it does have some inspiration from the lord of the rings, but its not completely lotr and the trope of "random mfs from a small village git gud along with a knowledgeable mentor" is not exactly a tolkien-trademarked thing. you really have to consciously look through the series after reading it to notice the lotr inspiration, and most of it is not similar

anyways mb for allat but ye its really good, probably the best series ive ever read. however, since i got my dad to start reading it, hes observed that im not a particularly picky reader, so i may just be missing things. also it was edited by his wife (who is an actual editor but still) so there are a bit of grammar/consistency problems but not super noticable

I start each year with a Vonnegut book, this year is God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater.

Player Piano should be required reading in today's era.

Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir is so good, if you're into lesbian space necromancers that somehow exist in one of the best sci Fi worlds ever created.
