I think one of the reasons romance are boring is that because you kinda need to fill 3 criteria :
- Good problems : If nothing happens they are no story, so romance needs a problem, and it's really hard to make problems that aren't cliché or boring or just minor things that become a drama and make the char look as crybaby, So it's hard to make good problems. (Kaguyama sama found a really smart way to create "problems", basically the war turn the problem into something fun and parodic, those problem arent technically serious but they are entertaining)
- Blossoming the romance : Starting with one of the char already loving one is easy but you miss half of the story, it's way to hard to make a good romance blossom (Call of the Night did that well)
- Side story : Romance sounds better when it's not 100% of the thing, but like for example a part of a thriller, we can gradually see the dynamics between the characters change have an evolution and work together. The easy path is to make the story 100% around, usually in a random school, with boring stakes, when they are barely little progress. Hard path is the side story, (and maybe in that sense Spy X Family is a better love story than 95% of romance anime)
So this was the 3 elements for a good romance, but if we look at the common market, they are also another big problem : putting the emphasis on the "idol", targeting male audience fantasizing on the girl everyone want in school rather than learning to look at the beauty in the outcast like him that he could live a beatiful story with realistically. I suppose it's way better to say to the target audience "Yes even if you are a looser you can have the idol" rather than "No, either you fundamentally change who you are, you can't have her, but if you change your mentality and lower your beauty standard, then you may find a girl that you share a lot with and your connexion will be even more stronger than with any generic idol"
Give me a romance anime where they are some plot around it, where we see char meeting for the first time and learn to know each other (and not as a flashback), where they have to face problem together, with outcasts, and with some smartness in the way it's written, and I'll read it as fast as I can. (Thats probably why I read Dorley sister that check box despite.. I mean don't read that for your own sanity)
