how to pronounce TH on birthday? im pronouncing it BIRT THEY, im still learning english and im having a hard time to pronounce R+L in the same word and TH
These people are messing with you
The "th" in "birthday" is an unvoiced sound (like in think, thing, thick), not voiced (like in this, that).
Put the tip of your tongue lightly between your teeth. Blow air out gently while keeping your tongue in place.
It should sound like a soft hiss
Practice with similar words: think, thin, tooth, thanks
The ‘th’ in birthday is the same sound as in think or thank you.
pronounce f.
then as you pronounce f push your lower lip forward and replace it with your tongue against your top teeth (do not press it hard) while still blowing air.
Try incorporating it into birffffftthhhhday and slowly phase out the f after practice
thats probably due to your tongue not being positioned flat and flush with your front teeth. also make sure that your lower lip is no longer touching your teeth as you transition from f to th (ultimately its just a matter of practice and experimentation to figure it out after this)
Awesome! Also consider watching youtube videos of language/speech coaches to get actual advice, reviewing phonetic pronunciations, and even recording and listening to yourself
yeah thank you man, i can understand and read english but i dont have friends to practice my speaking ability, im just self taught so most of my post here sometimes gets misunderstood lmao
You communicate perfectly fine (based on our limited interactions), its just that sometimes spoken language can be difficult. Full respect to you for learning and improving on your own volition! I know how bad I am with foreign sounds when language learning, but approximation tips like these are always helpful for me at least (still cannot roll my R's though). All the best!
i actually read here on vlr instead of learning books, it dont bored me and i can learn some slang words, reading your reply idk what voliton is and how to pronounce helpful (i pronounce it hel ful) so yeah thanks a lot
Fair enough. The beauty about this digital age is that you can google unfamiliar words. I would recommend reading though, but mostly because I love literature.
this is just a stop gap solution, they need to learn how to pronounce the th sound at the end of the day
Closer to burf-day
the "th" sound is soft, you don't say a hard T noise in birthday.
its definitely never a hard T sound in a TH.

watch the whole vid. 1:05 for birthday.
It's kind of hard to explain but th together has it's own kind of sound, it's kind of like the sss sound but with your tongue against your teeth. The words are split up birth - day
omg i thought i was crazy sometimes it sounds like S when im practicing haha
I was gonna try help and wasn't sure if this was some heretics related bait
Guess I'm overthinking
Just think of it this way. So, birthday consist of two words that being "birth" and "day" so you have to learn how to say "birth" and it's pronounced almost like "berth" with less emphasis on the e to differentiate it from the i in "birth". Why am i telling you to pronounce it like berth? Because it kinda just makes a lot more sense according to basic english pronounciation.
TLDR: useless texts that you won't even understand
