That's how words in German work, we connect two
Krankenwagen is a conjunction with "Kranke" in Plural, which means Sick/ill person, and "wagen" in Singular, which means vehicle.
So it turns into: "Krankenwagen" (kranken-wagen) or 1:1(?) translated: "sick person vehicle"

It also leads to this word:
"Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz"
