I know this might be irrelevant, but it leads people to think about gambling and clicking on the Thunderpick/Rainbet/Shuffle/Winz logos, being redirected to these websites. I believe VLR should be as gambling-free as possible, we can leave that to the HLTV bums. Removing the "betting" section could help prevent the increase of new gamblers, while also helping those who have gambling addictions. I don't know if VLR is sponsored by these websites, and I really hope not, because if that's not the case, we have one less reason to keep the "betting" section in.

Thanks for reading 🙏🏼

unless you are willing to donate to vlr thats not happening unfortunately that is a main portion of the sites revenue thru affiliate links id imagine

+i think the odds are genuinely useful

Can't we get sponsored by an ORG/streamer(s)/Riot? How hard would it be?

Yes, the odds are useful, but they also lead people to a bad path, even tho VLR isn't the only reason someone would start gambling of course

Gambling sites pay more with the site putting in very little effort apart from displaying a few adds on match pages.

naive thinking, vlr is free to use, the only way they can make money is by betting affiliate, unlesss you want to pay to use vlr
also its the only relevant industry that will pay to display their banner ads

I don't support op but there's ads at the bottom crodie

most people use adblockers, also adsense won't pay shit for those adobe etc ads

that becomes a question of the creator's greed, but my moral compass is kinda shot, so eh whatever. sites like these only exist as funnels to betting sites anyway

#30

its not even about greed when you spend so much money on API/ building and managing ur own database and millions of monthly visitors then ofc u need money

I mean they could just put up a kofi + footer/sidebar ads + dump chat logs intermittently if they were really against it, but realistically it's not something the creator is hard pressed abt (+he wants to make money? lol) so it seems he just provides the option either way

I figured they were sponsored by these websites, but how hard would it be to get different sponsors (like streamers/ORGs/Riot)?

Riot, Orgs and Streamers no one actually gains monetary value from sponsoring vlr, they already get the benefits free of cost since vlr increases community engagement and also they display live streamers on this website

vlr has ads? I've never used the internet without an adblocker so I legit had no idea. I always thought it was a surprisingly clean forum.

If you go to any match page, there'll be a small ad in the top right: https://i.imgur.com/hVA5YU8.png

A ton of respect to the VLR devs for making the ad as unintrusive as possible, because it really is hard for a lot of people to notice

There are also banner ads at the bottom of your screen on mobile sometimes, which are definitely more intrusive, but they're nothing too crazy

Oh shit I never realized that its an ad. I thought it was a feature since it showed actual data for actual games.

It genuinely is hard to notice even when it literally has ADVERTISEMENT written over it, which I do appreciate a lot

nah like regular ads. if u open the site without an adblocker and u're not logged in u don't see them?

Just tried... nothing. Maybe it's a regional thing?

completely new session? Ctrl F5 or open in incognito. If it is that's funny af, but I don't think so, I vpn regularly and still got them before making an acct

Separate browser with no account + incognito. Made sure I have ad block off as well

well that's odd. maybe it is a regional/isp thing? I'm not sure. You can play around with a vpn and see if u do get them.

You can turn off match odds in https://vlr.gg/settings under Misc

That being said, I don't know why this isn't more intuitive to toggle on/off, or why it's on by default to begin with

Thanks, this is very useful

I agree, it should be intuitive, like a switch below the betting section

because majority of the traffic most likely comes from bettors brother

I definitely understand this perspective and agree to an extent, though I personally like having the odds displayed for informational purposes. Of course, I don’t keep up with every Valorant league around the world, so it’s interesting if I’m looking at a match page to see who is favored to win and to what degree, or just how unexpected that upset was, etc. I wouldn’t bet real money on Valorant, so for me the odds are just extra information. The potential for influencing underage or vulnerable people into gambling that they can’t afford is a legitimate concern, however.

Yup, the information is good. If it wasn't for the sponsorship thing, maybe they could make it like Google's "probability to win" bar, where they show like "Team A - 80%/Team B - 20%", idk

Thanks! Maybe if VLR was sponsored by Riot somehow, we wouldn't have to rely on this kind of sponsorship. Riot could use a real forum where their community interacts, instead of those weird websites they have (which I don't think anyone is using lol)

it’s not like vlr has such large costs i imagine, there’s only text to server hosting shouldnt be that big of an issue and i dont think they pay their mods
