obviously i know that music is subjective and i don't have to like it

but i just wanted to know what about it appeals to people, because most people i talk to seem to be obsessed w some rapper like travis scott or kendrick

the only rappers ive ever liked listening to were eminem and nf, and tbh i dont really like them anymore either

Edit: idk why people are so unnecessarily salty about this, it’s not like I’m insulting your family bro
I literally just asked a question cause I was curious about what people find appealing about one of the most popular genres of music of all time since it doesn’t appeal to me

I do not like Eminem or NF anymore that is some high school shit, I like no rappers

what #2 said, and good lyricism is cool too. I’m not into commercial rappers who really only rap about drugs and women, but if they do something unique and artistic I enjoy it. Like MF DOOM, Quadeca, Danny Brown, Westside Gunn, JPEGMAFIA, and Kendrick Lamar

well i mean if your main taste is kpop you are gonna have to adjust to rap LMAO

you cant just listen for only a day or two, you gotta find songs you like, mix em in your playlist and get used to em, and if you don't then yeah you dont like rap

nah my main taste is rock, kpop is a newer interest and i only got into it like 1-2 months ago (again, its only bts)

ive listened to many rap songs and some are pretty good tbh, bts has rapping here and there too

Because they like it? It's something they enjoy. You can't pick one sole reason why people like something, even for valorant we probably enjoy it for different reasons.
Like I love listening to Dave since I find his music relatable, I can't speak for everyone else because there are usually loads of reason why people tend to enjoy music.

Also I've seen multiple posts questioning why people like rap, but never any other genre and it's starting to piss me off

#14
Acethyr
0
Frags
+

yeah that's why i put the disclaimer which made it clear that i already know music is subjective

i was curious as to what part of it appealed to them
i like rock cause usually the lyrics are nice and the beats are fire

so i was wondering what people like about rap because it doesn't appeal to me whatsoever, that's all

Taste is subjective, questioning other peoples taste will always trigger people as you are just saying you don't see anything desirable/enjoyable in something they enjoy. To give an example, most people would feel offend if you asked them "Why do people like you?" obviously questioning why people like a certain music genre is different but it's ultimately a similar principle, it feels like an attack.

In this case, there is more nuance since rap is a genre with pre-dominantly people of color so racists usually stigmatise and invalidate the genre due to racial prejudice. So when you question it you sound like one of 'them'. Also doesn't help that people literally ALWAYS question rap and nothing else like why ??? Are you telling me that there is no other genre that you don't like? That every other genre is something you could enjoy but not rap? (not just your fault but this post contributes to it).
I could list a few other reasons why people are salty about this but I'll move on

If you are geninuely curious then phrasing is important for these topics if you don't want to anatagonise anyone. Like instead of asking "Why do people like X", if you asked "What do you like most about X?" or "What are some the things you like about Y?". They give a different implication since you are already acknowledging that people like it so it comes across more naturally as curiosity compared to why do people like it which can sound like an actual attack as mention above

i can see that ig, but for example if someone asked "why do people like rock" (rock is my favorite genre), i wouldn't really take it as an attack
obviously that doesnt apply to everyone, just saying that it wouldnt be an attack to me so i guess i didnt see my post as one either

"Also doesn't help that people literally ALWAYS question rap and nothing else like why ??? Are you telling me that there is no other genre that you don't like? That every other genre is something you could enjoy but not rap?"
as for this, honestly i think its just because rap is hella different and at the same time hella popular
thats why i made this post, it's something SO popular but something that doesn't appeal to me whatsoever, it made me curious. could be the same for other people

If you had listened to LITERALLY any other artist that wasn’t a trap artist or white, you would probably understand why people like rap.

I literally have and I have not liked it
I shouldn’t have added the Eminem and nf part to this post because that’s like the only thing people care about pointing out even though I listened to them when I was a child and the whole point was that Theyre the only rappers I ever LIKED listening to

Nowadays I like NO ONE, NO ONE SOUNDS GOOD TO ME. So I’m asking WHAT people like about it, since it’s very POPULAR

You understand now?

hip-hop and rap grew because they spoke on the working class and black and youth culture in a way that challenged the status quo of the musical trends of the time. its a genre full of history that transcended its own primary objective and became the status quo itself. but currently it is still a portrait of a generation and that by itself is very interesting

ive only listened to rap basically my entire life and havent really explored into any other music genres

recently its been mostly trap style rap with insane beats that carry (yeat, carti, sofaygo, ken carson, rich amiri, and travis) whenever im looking to just vibe when driving places during the day or doing something active like gym or college prac. it just gives you a feeling of getting hyped n shit to feel good

then theres my other side of pop style rap with crazy trap beat elements still, but its a little slower and more chill (eem triplin, sosocamo, don toliver, tecca). just play these when driving at night, after a long day, or alone in ur feelings and they provide the best chill vibe ever. beat still gets you pumped, but it being a bit slower and more melodic mmmm chefs kiss <3**

then theres kendrick whos always there for the real deep shit that always hits no matter what

shoutout eem triplin, sosocamo, yeat, and carti for always carrying

you could legit just chatgpt this but wtv

as a rap ball knower (kendrick lamar top 500 listener + 100k mins of rap this year), theres a lot of reasons people like rap.

tldr sound of both the delivery/flows and beats is the main reason people like rap, rap and its lyrics exist because of black culture in america, conscious rap exists and is popular because it highlights the bad part of rap/black culture

the main one is the sound. people love rap beats, theyre really fast-paced and catchy, but also the sound of the artist is what makes it fun and interesting to listen to. people like yeat, playboi carti, lil uzi, travis scott, future, and a lot of the more mainstream rappers are there because people want to listen to how the song sounds more than the lyrics themselves. the main thing about the lyrics people talk about (the sex, money, drugs and violence) is that they represent the culture and the lives of many black americans, making it easy for them to agree with than pop/rock topics.

also for the only rappers youve listened to, eminem and nf are not the best examples for access to the genre, though they do tick one of the boxes- they sound good.
theres also conscious rap, which has the lyrics as the main focus and reason people like it. people like kendrick lamar, malice, j cole, and others, talk mostly about whats going on in the world, and talking about the same things as other rappers but in a negative light, whether it be problems with the rap/music industry, worldly problems, why the culture is bad for black communities (prison, violence, death, addictions, etc), personal problems or just other introspective things are why people like conscious rap.

many non-conscious rappers do dabble in a bit of introspectiveness too, with travis scott on my eyes and lose, future on we dont trust you/we still dont trust you and nights like this, metro boomin producing creepin (the weeknd, 21 savage), no more (travis scott, kodak black and 21 savage), and things like that as the main examples for me.

This is a nice explanation man Ty

I like it when the lyrics are about problems or things that should get talked about but dont
As opposed to the sex money drugs shit which I just don’t like hearing, if you do the of course that’s fine. Just not for me

Ty for not being a pretentious prick or simply pointing out “oH yOU oNlY liStEN to EmIneM anD nf!!!l”

like i used to listen 90s and 80s rap and at that time rap was just a short form of story telling of their struggles and friendship. also most feuds and rivalry like eastcoast vs west coast were just so good to listen.

nowadays most rap have the same flow and same story, very few of them actually are good.

I'd recommend I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU (the album) by JPEGMAFIA, with songs like "either on or off the drugs", "i scream this in the mirror before i interact with anyone" are my pick for you - if you prefer music that is more rock-adjacent.
Also if you like thought-provoking stuff I'd suggest Clipse's "Let God Sort Em Out", Kendrick Lamar's mainstream discog, McKinley Dixon's latest two albums, JID's "The Forever Story".
I get your sentiment, as I used to hate Rap and Hip-hop because I thought it promoted "degenerate culture" and it was all about that (It's just labels pushing stuff that sells). Not until the 2024 beef that I began to realize Rap is more than that
