Yeah it’s as common as saying fuck. Also the typical term for hardcore flaming someone is equivalent to mom sky.
Not justifying their behavior, just saying widespread toxic insults is pretty mainstream in Chinese gaming, and there are some differences in translations that make some of the insults worse than what they actual intend to be.
If you check my post history you’ll realize I quite hate the EDG super fans lmao. They’ve been doing this shit not just in valorant, just a few low iq individuals that shine a bad light on the region.

NMSL (ni ma si le in pinyin/你妈死了) which translates to your mom is dead. they say mom sky when flaming others in English

Such swear words are also common in Turkish, even a part of daily use. Like, a you would be startled by a bug or something and say "Fuck your mom" in exclamation.
I have tried reading a machine-translated Chinese novel in the past so I kinda had an inkling that this whole thing was a bad translation issue. I mean, people starting and engaging with this shit are still toxic trash but this really shows how little comprehension social media addicts truly have.
