The goat debate in valorant can never be settled because of constant changing meta..... On one hand there are pros who have won champs twice on the other hand there are players who started a gaming revolution in their marginalised region.

faker is a 6 time world champion, Constantly a top player over the span of a decade, and double digit regional wins. Theres no argument

S1mple has 21 HLTV MVP medals, a Major championship, 3 player of the year crowns, MULTIPLE iem titles, and an intel grand slam title.

Overwatch is nealy double the age of valorant and the GOAT debate is still between 3 players.

It takes more than 6 years to decide a GOAT (with one dominant exception in Faker.), It'll take valorant even longer with how volatile the meta is

I wonder if anything would change if every fps player in Korea just collectively played this game rather than spread across overwatch, sudden attack, etc.

There's also fighting games where people like Arlsan Ash won like, 4 evos, in a game that's arguably more volatile than Valorant. That's also within a span of like 3 years

Fighting games aren't nearly as volatile, as a fighting game player myself. (Street fighter 3: 3rd strike tournament winner, Gotta flex rq :P )

They are pretty volatile, metas can shift quickly especially in newer games. But not as drastically as VAL, especially not right before a major tournament. Most changes are small and only shift tier lists slightly rather than a top character getting killed before the biggest tournament of the year.

Even with fighting games, there are multiple top pros. Yes Arslan ash has won 4 evos, but you also have Sonicfox, Tokido, Knee, Xiao hai, MenaRD, Leshar, the list goes on.

not much at all. val just has high variance and skill ceiling isn't as high for one team or player to be dominant apart for a long time
and you can make similar case for other region too. what if all eu cs and r6 and apex players just collectively played val? or what if cod and fortnite was dead and every American played val? what if chinese government didn't have any of those gaming rules and fixed matchfixing problems and every mobile player there played val?
it wouldn't be much different at all overall

I guess that's fair. But man, maybe I'm missing something but tekken 8 just seems like a coin flip in every match. Maybe it's not that volatile if there is a consistent winner

Sure, but I don't think the EU/US hypothetical is quite the same point. Korea has a pretty strong track record of dominating the esports that become major games there. You have guys complaining about the games they play being "one region esports" too like Overwatch and Starcraft. Not to mention how small Korea is so the talent is spread much more thin

Afaik Val isn't up there yet in Korea.

Tekken is the least volatile of all fighting games, Powerful characters usually remain powerful or near the top in power. Characters like devil jin, Steve, Nina, Jin Kazama, paul, Law, Julia as of late, all stay top or Near the top of the tier lists.

Street fighter on the other hand can have a different top tier every month, especially with new games.

Take sf6 for example, Kimberly used to be the best character in the game but one nerf made her B tier, Chun li was consistently a top level threat until Mai just did her job better. There is volatility which means top 8's and tournament winners change constantly. Just last year MenaRD won with blanka, Year before that it was Punk with a different set of characters, before that it was angrybird with Ken, yes those 3 have remained dominant, but they were all forced onto different characters in order to do so. Just look at the rest of top 8, there is no consistent set of characters or PLAYERS for that matter making top 8 compared to a game like sf4 or sf3.

but consider when and where starcraft or overwatch were popular as esports during their peak. only Korea and usa and that too almost decades ago. korea is and has been good at esports because it's the birthplace of esports and has better culture and infrastructure than any other country in esports. other countries are now catching up. It's not old times anymore. even now esports isn't really popular worldwide as sports but with time and more countries getting developed there will be a day where some random country could overtake Korea or USA or China in esports. it's just how time and development works

and your logic applies to any country with strong esports culture and infrastructure. If any game becomes a major game in those countries they will be a powerhouse in that game. and pretty sure val is very popular in sk. It's consistently top 3 popular game in pc cafes
