The reason Black Sabbath played such a dark, gloomy and heavy (for the time) style of music is because their lead guitarist Tony Iommi lost some of his fingers on his fretting hand and so had to massively alter his setup to be able to play again, massively downtuning his guitar and creating prosthetic fingertips for himself that required him to push down way harder on the strings, making his guitar tone very distorted and heavy for the time, which caused them to pivot their otherwise standard psych rock band into something a lot darker, and essentially birthing the metal genre from the loss of Tony Iommi's fingers
