I think some Japanese fans took it very seriously

they are not so used to banter or "Western" jokes

#3

japanese people mad because riot casters, balla, sideshow, and bren are laughing at zeta division related jokes

the power rankings with zeta's logo turned upside down was the catalyst for most of it.

did they flip the logo on purpose? no way it was on purpose right...

#31

it was on purpose but they did the same thing to TSM and FPX a while ago.
It's just their way of joking around
Is this really that bad to send death threats in Asia?

#33

ohhh i see. Nah not really, but some might have taken some offense, although it does not justify death threats.

#32

It was on purpose. So they can flip the picture and say Zeta is the best team.

#34

sounds like a good banter but that is hella disrespectful

#37

Maybe. But saying anything bad about any team can be deemed disrespectful if you care too much. Also, this isn't even a serious list. They only do these for the entertaining banter and hypotheticals.

in Asia, we would understand that joke and not get offended but nobody would do it because it's kinda awkward. So if somebody do it, then we think yeah that's awkward but they still do it anyway meaning they have bad intent

#5

basically platchat put zeta at the bottom of the list and they put the zeta logo upside down

#11

A tournament ranking wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t piss someone off.

#12

yea but it's not a thing in Asia I think
probably poor translation added fire on to it

#8

so basically, plat chat put ZETA last on their power ranking and they kinda made jokes on ZETA
e.g)Teams are blacklisting Zeta in scrims cuz they are so bad (It was a joke)
and they put Zeta flair upside down
I'm not sure but putting a thing upside down is disrespectful to Japanese? (there are some Japanese comments saying it)

somebody uploaded in JP valorant community and Japanese fans took it as an offense

I mean it isnt about putting something upside down being offensive more like just don't disrespect other regions. Simple, and based. You really shouldn't need to give respect to other regions because you are getting "death threats" or whatever, just be a normal human. Have fun, but within limits and without disrespecting others.
#peace.

That's the thing though, who's limits? There's clearly a cultural barrier here cuz nobody in NA or EMEA would bat an eye to this kind of banter. This is only disrespectful if you don't know how entertainment works in other countries, so whoever took these clips to Japan and tried to make it look like they were being disrespectful mistranslated the shit out of what is otherwise a pretty entertaining segment, which is the only reason why plat chat makes these non-serious lists.

about the upside down thing, it's more like vandalism of imagery depicting a community is understood as a direct attack on them

if people think "wow man how sensitive can you get" well it's just a cultural diff man. i'm sure some of the things you think are offensive, they would be like whatever bro. their worldview is just fundamentally different

TL:DR The Japanese fans are mad that the logo was reversed and inverted, and that no one on the show said nothing constructive about ZETA during the segment.

Japan sees ZETA as their pride and joy in Valorant, so to see that 4 Westerners kick down their pride is akin to personal attack on Japan.

It's just a cultural barrier/difference, but one that was not well-received.

Not only was this before the tournament, but it was meant to be entertainment, not a serious list. Whoever shared it, I question their intent. Also, Wyatt did praise Zeta's post plants and their set ups on their map picks, so the non-ranking segment did have positives

本当にこの人たちが公式のキャスターなのか? 自国のチームを馬鹿にされるよりよっぽど可哀想だよ。このリスペクトに欠けた人たちの実況解説をこれからもずっと見なきゃならないんでしょ?

Are these people really official casters? It's more pitiful than being ridiculed by your team. You have to keep watching the commentary of those who lack this respect, right?

other:

I am japanese. I'm supporting my national team.
In fact, the result of the match will not be exactly this, and the ZETA division will advance to the playoffs.
They keeped making an effort to come here. And it's the same with other teams.
Please have respect for all teams and players.

inconclusion: maybe, plat chat has gone too far this time by flipping Zeta logo upside down

my opinion:

obviously death threats are bad. water is wet. but this is literally just what happens when you have a community with a drastic language barrier + cultural differences and try to instigate them. plat chat's intentions weren't to be assholes, they were trying to be funny. but in japanese culture that's a big nono, using strangers you aren't friendly with as the punchline to your humor. it's extremely rude and disrespectful, and obviously when said "disrespect" was proven to be wrong, they'd bite back.

Banter and sarcasm is something many Japanese people don’t understand. For western esports fans bantering is common, however this type of content is rare in Japan.

I’m not justifying their action, just providing some context on why some fans didn’t receive the segment well.

A lot of fans are actually quite open about criticisms, but they don’t like the way it’s delivered.

Example: Calling Takumi Minamino of Liverpool a Carabao Cup Merchant will typically be seen as banter in the west, but some Japanese fans will think you are shitting on him.

Also who is Kenshi Takada? I see one user talking about him in the comments, and something about a bad dream?

Really lost on that one.

Ye I mean to be fair, you dont want jokes on ur national team

But a lot of fans from every region are too much like kpop fans lmao

Shouldnt overgeneralize + forgive them they are just so rightfully happy zeta is doing well

#41

"National team" is probably contributing to why so many people over there are seemingly over-invested in what would otherwise be considered harmless banter. While in reality, plat chat isn't making fun of Japan or the players, and just doing what's become common in the west: making up entertaining hypothetical placements based on previous expectations of a team in the video game.

But after they do better than expectations, it's being shared as if their doubt was somehow unfounded and a barely noticeable gesture is being taken as disrespectful to the entire country

#42
Ultimate6989

Ye good points

I think the JP fans are just so happy zeta is doing well, that they are just taking jokes as insults now

But honestly, I can only imagine how they are feeling, so y'know I'd let it slip

Literally I have not seen any japanese val fans that were disrespectful in any forum even when they got shit on in so many events and even when they were treated like nobodies even when they were called free wins to whoever plays against them, they only got mad when their team who was working so hard and was trying their best to carry japans flag was being disrespected and was treated poorly so ofc they'd get mad 💀 it might not be that big of a deal for westerners but that isn't the same for Asia, though not all but mostly all of asians are thought to be respectful even to their opponents and yes banter can also happen in asian gaming community but what plat chat did and said wasn't even funny it was just plain disrespectful 💀 I mean I'm not that offended by plat chat but I'm sure the fans were but death threats are still not excused but hey they started it sooooo

#45
Louie

And just to add
Don't forget about cultural differences, just because being disrespectful is normal in the west or some regions doesn't mean it's ok for other regions and I don't mean to defend them and the death threats are very wrong but you can't expect them to be happy when their pride in val was being dogshowed right? But yeah I do think that there are people who overreacted but I can't simply say that they overreacted cause it didn't happen to me so idk
