It's unethical for people who aren't rich/have generational wealth to have children for their own selfish reasons?

Like why would you want your children to suffer especially in the current state of the world if you can't give them a financially secure life?

depends what you mean by rich. The average joe who can support their family with the basic needs of education, food and shelter. then yeah thats fine.

if you mean like the child shouldnt need to work a day in their life, then thats a terrible take

I never understood this argument, what do you mean "in the current state of the world"? The lowest homicide rate in human history? the longest average human lifespan in history? the most medically, technologically advanced period of human history?

The core principal of your argument is that life is a burden, but what about the enjoyment of life? finding peace? finding purpose? You say that children born into this world suffer, but what gives you the knowledge or authority to declare that children, especially those born into first-world countries, only suffer?

people think the world is at its worst state because we are being exposed more to violence than ever before. its like there was 20 things happening before and we knew about 3, now theres 10 and we know about 7. gives the impression things are worse when they are better overall and causes panic (although economically things are indeed worse)

im not having kids at all, why spend millions of dollars on it when you could be financially stable and happier with just you and your partner

any argument otherwise is you getting tricked by your own biology and evolution, you have to ascend past that

having kids is a personal choice, but your argument as to why is stupid because you ignore all of the good aspects of having kids and all the bad aspects of having a partner

firstly, your entire argument revolves around money. having a partner is good because 2 incomes means more money, having kids is bad because it means less money. But if you ask any loving parent, watching someone that they grew from themselves learn to read, or ride a bike, or pass school, or get married themselves is worth far more to them than anything of monetary value. Im not saying that you need to reconsider your stance, but stop applying your worldview of "money is the most important thing" to every other person

also the concept of being "tricked by your biology" is retarded asf. You are not separate from your biology, you ARE your biology. You cannot be tricked by something that is part of your being. The need to eat, drink, shit, sleep, love, cry is what makes you human. Trying to disconnect yourself from your biology doesnt make you some enlightened individual, it just sounds like a sad way to live

The need to eat, drink, shit, sleep, love, cry is what makes you human

This is illogical because these things keep you alive so you're comparing apples and oranges, the biological desire to have kids doesn't keep you alive but is simply an evolutionary mechanism to ensure the survival of the human race after you die and anything that occurs after your death has zero impact on your life since you're not there to see the possible benefits and shouldn't be considered or factored into your equation

"money is the most important thing"

it's not just about money, it's about quality of life, if you consider your quality of life to be a numerical score than yes having more money will most likely correlate with this going up (obviously there are countless other factors but in general yes there is a positive correlation here), and spending thousands of hours slaving away doing things for your kids will most likely decrease your quality of life score since you have less time to do things that you actually want to do

if somehow having kids improves your score more than it sets it back i'm impressed and have a good life i guess

I would only think it’s unethical if it’s like a really really shit country like Sudan or Libya where there’s ongoing wars and desperate food shortages. Obviously context matters but bringing a child into a world with high child mortality and low living conditions is unethical and is a root of a lot of the world’s issues currently.

If by rich you mean generational wealth, like #2 said, you're wrong. Honestly, life's harder that way because you get unneccesary limelight. Being comfortable (economically), on the other hand, is much more fun, and having kids, from what I've heard is one of the biggest wins in your life.

But if by "poor" you mean actual poverty, then yes, it's better to not have kids. But we can't really change the mindset of some people. They think more kids = more money, but don't account for the food, clothing and economic crises they will face.

Frankly I believe nobody should be having kids and we should just allow ourselves to go extinct, but I know very few people share that sentiment.

understand the feeling of being afraid of people suffering but wanting to give life is not selfish at all. living is the greatest gift you could possibly give to anyone. we should be thriving for a better world instead of trying to stop life from happening

In south asian countries, there are lot of people giving birth in hope that they get a boy. So, that they can grow up and support the family. They will keep trying until they get a boy which just increases population and instead of solving their poverty it makes it worse. So, i do think that there should be some kind of rule for cases like this. But saying only rich should have children is just dumb.
