So far this season he has played:

  • Tejo (on Split and Bind at kickoff, performed badly)
  • Brimstone (on Fracture, performed okay)
  • Deadlock (picked once, bad)
  • Fade (picked once, bad)
  • Vyse (Very good on Lotus, okay on Split, altho NRG hasn't touched that map for a bit)
  • Sova (Best agent).

I think one of NRG's role issues is that brawk is kind of a one-trick Sova, and his next best agent is Vyse. As such on non-Sova maps either lots of roles have to be shifted around for him to play Vyse, or he has to play a different agent.
On Lotus the comp is completely fine, but in other non-Sova maps (i.e. Split) this may become an issue in the long run.

What do you guys think?

Not an issue at all, he can play fade and Skye if they need him to, they just don’t. One bad showing on fade doesn’t mean he can’t play her

My issue with NRG is their whole sunk cost issue with Ethan vs brawk on Skye. Brawk always had an elite Skye in challengers, in fact I would argue he was more known for his Skye in 2023 than his Sova. They think that bc they have Ethan, they have to put him on Skye instead of brawk

I'm not too sure that that is the reason they have Ethan Skye vs brawk Skye
What scenarios are you putting brawk on Skye? In all comps where Ethan played Skye she was either the solo initiator or brawk was playing Tejo. Depends on if you would rather brawk Skye Ethan Tejo but this was kickoff so I think they didn't know Ethan was comfortable on Tejo yet.

I think he's not that comfortable on Fade. Last year Bind was one of brawk's worst maps simply cause he couldn't play Sova. Lifetime his Fade rating in VCT is probably far lower than that of Sova despite Sova having so many more games. Skye is a different matter but he has no reps in tier 1 so who knows.

The phenomenon of good Sovas bad Fades and vice versa needs to be studied

This happens a lot too with KJ/Cyph, Neon/Raze, even Omen/Astra. Roles are kinda fake tbh

I agree. Maybe one reason is that back in the older days certain players played different roles, so when they have to fill a new role they learn only one or two agents, as needed for the team depending on comp and meta, rather than the entire role.

For example Cryo hasn't touched Killjoy and barely touched Vyse. His Cypher is pretty good though.

I think it's that and also the difference between proactive vs reactive elements in utility that has the same function.

Utility that requires more preparation but then lets you keep your gun out requires a different playstyle than utility that is more versatile but must be used closer to danger, even if the effect is nearly the same.
