India in E-sports

Fellow Indian friends.

India have 1 billion people in the country, why are they never a region inside the e-sports scene? At least at DotA, LoL, CSGO and valorant i dont see them appearing. Do people like e-sports in India?

It's a honest question, , this is not in any way flaming towards your region.

Edit: My point with population would be, because they could be a region on their own if they had a lot of people playing it. Like brazil has its own region, China normally have it too and etc..

If someones wants a TL;DR answer this is what i got:

• Indian parents thinks that gaming is a waste of time and that you should focus on your studies (Engineering/Doctors?)
• Mobile games are actually huge in India, they like specially Pubg Mobile (which they are among the best) and free fire.
• PC is very expensive, even though internet is cheap.
• They have started at CSGO, but an unfortunate event (word.exe) happened and it harmed their scene.
• After pandemic PC culture started and we may expect them in future valo.

Esports is very new to India comparing to other regions, population doesn't matter here

Population is not equal to performance , there are many factors which determine whether a particular nation will be good at something or not

Honestly, the esports scene is not taken seriously in India. Those who do take it seriously cannot get enough support or funding to make it to an international level. Its a cultural thing.

Indian parents are very anti-esports also mobile gaming is very popular in our region so very few people(in comparison to mobile gaming) follow the scene + The man, the myth, the legend- Nikhil "Forsaken" Kumawat

u take jee exam or neet, or ur a degen, no support in India, my relatives even thrashing my choice of becoming anything i like, so forget about esports here

according to indian parents there is only two occupations in this world - doctor and engineer

Two reason:-
From start in India kids are taught if you get good marks you succeed otherwise you are a failure.
The above does not apply strictly if your family is well off.

Also PC cost a fortune in India, a decent PC will cost more than your families monthly income for general public.

They are underdeveloped in esports plus not a lot have the privilege for good PCs and internet (correct me if I'm wrong indians).

The average income of an Indian is less than 2k usd annually, so they cant afford proper infrastructure. Its also seen as a bad career choice and is highly discouraged within the household

Many Factors come into why we are not great or dominant in eSports

1. We are poor , yes we are poor most of us don't have pcs or laptops to play games like LoL or Valorant
2. our society in general is not outgoing so many parents don't want their children to become pro gamers sadge.
3. less tournament opportunity and exposure internationally

But tbh eSports in general has seen a huge blow in our region in 2018 due PUBGM , most of the Indian fanbase of valo are from PUBGM , PUBGM is flourishing because it's a mobile game and it's easily affordable. Many of my friends know alot about Valorant like teams comps maps players but they themselves have not played the game cuz they don't own a pc.

We invest too much on IITians as a result most indians are on big position in many MNCs but asia in general don't believe in esports as a career. There were an incident occured in 2018 in csgo that dragged esports in india to darkness if it didn't had happened maybe india would be much better than it is right now. However I dont think we had lol or dota tournaments (i really dont know about them ). Still there is hope as the esports scene in india is growing thanks to pubg and lockdown xD.

High Cost of PC parts and strict parents who constantly worry about kids education

Cause we aren't that good
In order to improve we need to play against good regions, even while playing against sea teams there is always a ping diff.
Also indian make shit decisions, most of them stick with the same team(eg. ge have two bad players but they won't consider roster change, adding some young new talent will make them insta top 3 even in sea/kr/jp in about 2-3 months)

E-sport is not considered as a career but rather as a way to pass our time (for fun) because of how we grew up, but the most important thing was having internet as people outside major cities did not have a proper network connection that can be used with the economy available, but at 2017 "Jio" started providing free data (it is more complicated to explain why? like the govt banned higher denomination money and introduced new so they had to clean up their black money, well you can search it up but i doubt you will understand), because of that we got access to online games (mostly mobile games) as some already said, pubg became the popular choice until it got banned (again politics but international lol), then due to lockdown every person had to get a laptop unless they are too poor and a stable wifi (even tho it is not free now it is really cheap) thus valorant became popular and apex too but not as popular as valorant. and we got a cheating case in counter strike as most people know which reduced the credibility, that being the case india has started to come towards valorant as most educational institutions introduced esport into their "sports days" along with other physical sports. So yeah you may expect india in future esports venue.

Only recently has technology and infrastructure evolved to a point wherein a greater portion of India is even aware of the existence of "e-sports". Still, this number is almost certainly less than a tenth of the population. Similarly, organizations and financial support has increased tremendously in recent years, permitting more and more upcoming players to dedicate themselves to the game.

I think India will start making a dent in the next few years: more and more people are playing games, investment is increasing (tournaments, organizations, infrastructure), and interest is mounting. With the massive potential player base slowly being realized, talent will start to shine and the opportunities to develop skills will become abundant - everything required from a successful esport region is steadily becoming present.

Internet penetration exploded only within the past decade, and PC ownership increased mainly due to COVID. Most Indian homes didn't have PCs, and still don't. We are a primarily rural nation, mobile penetration is huge though.

btw u can build a decent pc for 500$ and a good one for 2k . its not the costly if your parents are working in a company paying 12k per year .

The problem is twofold honestly, cheap data and cheaper smartphones means everyone and their moms first gaming experience is a mobile game. The PC gaming scene is so laughably underdeveloped that it barely even exists, what little did exist, we ruined for ourselves.

It's difficult to face things the way they are but it would've taken a miracle for any indian esports team let alone GE to make it out of the lcq. Put up against the world our region is pretty dogshit.

I was low pro player during my college days and to be honest I was earning shit by esports then my parents decide to put a full stop on gaming career. Now am working as a software engineer and earning more than average everytime I think about past and realise my parents were not wrong there is very low scene of gaming in India and now am earning some out so I can fulfill my dream at least. That's why esport is not big in India and highly doubt it would be big in India soon yoo

Generally, people don't have pc's. Those who play and are some what dedicated to it, 90 percent of the time get ridiculed for saying they would like to go pro in esports. "Esports" in general is not seen as a profession in India, and some parents who are bit more open minded, see the toxicity in the scene and discourage they're children. Also the mumbai server's toxicity is something else, and even if you love the game, many just leave beacuse of that. So by adding factors such as studies + general discourgement by family members + PC's being costly + toxicity in the ranked q. A couple of my friends hit radiant and dreamed of going pro, got offers to trial for teams, but in the end life caught up to them, and they were forced to give up the game and start grinding and study for competive exams with the top colleges as a goal (let's say has a 100 seats) while around a million people write the exam. The pressure just gets to the average Indian youth with Esports dreams I'd say and they just give it up.
