Riot's deal with SOOP is bleeding SEA dry. The only way things can change is if there is enough public outrage, that is the only way things can change.

How can sm1 explain

#8

SOOP is covering the tournament costs for their game, which were previously paid by Riot themselves.

So hows that bad? Do they cut corners or sm

#13

Its bad because with this deal SOOp has exclusive streaming rights meaning games cant be stream and costreamed on YT and Twitch which the majority of SEA uses

they save some money in exchange to slowly kill a region that not generate so much viewership, bussines first i guess

partnering with soop is not a bad thing but the devil is in the detail

0 knowledge of said region

i used to work around with the data back then, vct viewership in sea is kinda low, even indonesia for quite huge country and active player, it's a different story if we talkin about the other game tho

#18

Thats because the viewership is scattered on to different platforms and different languages. On YT where Indonesians prefer to watch i can see regular matches get 3 k+ views. On the Thai channel and some co streams it can easily go up to 10k+. Other regions like PH VN and MYSG get around 1k-3k depending on the team thats playing

if you are saying 2-5k viewership in regular matches and 8-12k viewership in big games were LOW, what do you think about south asia VCL?
they pulled WORSE than indo, yet still running it with 2 different language of casts?

i give you guys a bitter pill of fact to swallow, anything less than 20k(back then) is not sexy for placement,

take a good look at jp, easily reach 30k on regular day, and it just the official not include any wp,

i think that's the main reason riot dont want persue the scene any longer there, they just cannot convert the huge number, unfortunately the pie is eaten by esport in mobile games by quite far

if you are a marketing company that want to step in esport, which one better, easily make 100k-500k or hardly make it 20k ? most of the time they just see numbers

  • TH 5k
  • KR/SA/TR
  • NA 3.6k
  • VN 3.4k
  • ES/DACH/LAN
  • MYSG 1.2k
  • PH 1.1k

You know that the data says the contrary. Thailand alone is higher than NA, Indonesia is x5 NA. Vietnam that have 0 team in T1 is at same level than NA

do you think riot give na any better treatment ?

no, infact they are all bleeding there, cuz no one wanna invest to org in tier2, sea is huge market for esport but riot barely make 100k views in total, so what is your point ?

i say this a lot in other thread :

the only thing to rescue tier 2 is to fix tier 1 contracting system, give any team just 1 year contract, so every year trash team got recycled, and tier 2 will grow eventually

also for sea, make soop available to co-stream elsewhere is a good start, soop actually just need a placement not to monopoly the entire broadcast cuz this is just esport not premier league with 6 mil views, that's what i mean by "devil is in the detail"

My point is that SEA T2 is one of the biggest market in term of viewership, top 3 without a doubt, and maybe even T2 now the league fused together, and that part of your statement is incorrect. I'm not saying that it's Soop that is destroying the league, it's a possibility, but I lack of info to be sure of it.

The problem of NA is NA mentality that care only about T1 and that is unable to have a successful T2 model that help their grassroot to grow, and thats why their T2 have low viewer. Na is gonna die if the steamer and owner doesnt work on mentality to fix things (The fact only Sen have a T2 team among the SIX NA TEAM, would be enough a reason to thanos half of NA structure for T1, and take structure that really care about the league even if they are smaller and less clouted)

bigger market but niche, that is all i can say for sea

also i think riot kinda hate sea cuz moonton that literally copy their game getting bigger there, riot lost so much oportunity cost(we talkin about hundred mill) but this is entirely their mistake to not making mobile lol sooner, this would go to another story,

i belive as long as is not reach atleast 100k for sea in general, they just dont give a f about anything happen there, just like na tier2

Can someone tell what's actually going on, I'm clueless about the SOOP matter

#14

Riot and SOOP have an exclusivity deal where SOOP will cover tournament cost and in turn SOOP will have stream exclusivity. This kills the tier 2 scene because nobody knows or even cares about SOOP

Additional information:
The whole of SEA could easily garner 5-10k simulataneous views on YT and Twitch. However, on SOOP the official english stream barely makes it over 500 views

in mid 2024 even before ascension jake sin and riot decided to make VCL SEA exclusive to SOOP, which forbiding anyone to do watchparty stream except in their own site (this made DSG pulled out of the region) and merging the whole SEA + HKTW + Mongolia as one region. mind you, the ping HKTW team has to play is about 70-80ish and mongolia 100-120ish(idk the exact) while all of SEA played with 20-40.
some says it's because we don't have good viewership which totally BS. indo+th+vn could pull 40k if combined for big, crucial games. i know countries like PH and MY/SG don't pull that much of the numbers, but there has to be other options no? like not streaming the games or streaming it without casters.
some says it's a financial issues. this is another BS. indo th vn all 3 of them have had sponsors even in the past pre franchising league until 2024.
so, idk what is the real reason why they did this.

I'm not even sure Soop is the best problem, while they pay all is good. The main problem is that we really need national Tier 3, it's a must-have otherwise it's gonna die, it's okay if it's full amatory with 0 money in it, but we need it for grassroot

Without visibility, sponsors disappear.
Without local pride, fans disconnect.
And without support, teams die — one by one

Please RIOT. if you let this continue to happen. monopolizing only 1 stream service, making the format very bad and unpleasant. you will definitely lose this important SEA region. there will be no other players like forsaken, jinggg, or other outstanding sea tier 2 players who will rise to tier 1. Bad decision to deal with this soop thing. from 7 SEA country that compete in vct, only Thailand is familiar with and frequently uses this bad stream service called “SOOP”.
