Make friends with the students in 2/2H and ask them for help. Even better if they can tell you what is covered in 1 so you can study or look it up ahead of time.
My suggestion is that you can start by trying to understand the word order in Chinese. Once you grasp the word order, you'll pick up the rest of the language more quickly. You don't need to memorize the measure words mechanically, just get a feel for them

you should watch and listen to chinese stuff, just get used to hearing the langauge and recognising the words.
the most common way to learn a langauge is to just sit down and watch a drama, podcast or an anime in sub and just try assigning the words you hear to the words you see. the better you get at chinese the easier this becomes. listening to chinese songs can also help just improve your general sense but is less efficient but still good.
You need to write a lot, Chinese grammer is quite finnicky and annoying to know as a english speaker so I reccomend taking easy texts and just rewriting paragraph and get used to the order in which words are said. also to memorise chinese characters writing them out is best.
you should always write chinese character as phrases for example, dont just write 大 (big) write phrases its associated with like 大家(everyone) or 很大(very big). and if you are a beginner write out the pinyin - 大家 dà jiā and say it out loud to get used to it.
if you need any materials and such I have some ranging from grade 1 -> grade 4 native chinese and grade 5 chinese second langauge textbooks and reccomendations on what to watch and stuff. But use the textbooks they provide you, as thats probably best suited for you and if you have any questions you are welcome to ask me
I’m actually quite curious. For you guys , are words with the third tone like “jiǎ” difficult to learn?
well unfortunately ive learnt chinese since I was born alongside english so I cant really answer that myself but from my experience with those who have learnt chinese as second language the third tone can be hard to say at first and most cannot emphasize the sound but whats much harder is switching to different tones in the same phrase especially like tone 2 to tone 4 like 融(róng)入(rù)
So far we haven't fully gone into the tones, she's given us ten or so words and then I think she'll talk about the tones later this week, I think the falling and rising tones will probably be hardest for me
