never been to america, but if im not personally putting it into the person's pocket and its instead the app or something asking for a tip im not paying

yeah theyre automatically adding minimum 20% gratuity to our final bill
50% of restaurants include it to the receipt automatically, the other half includes the total tip calculation (18%, 20%, 22%) for customers to include in the receipt. It’s because America has this shitty tradition where they pay their servers half the minimum wage, and expect the customers tip to cover a livable wage.
idk if American food is generally cheap but it would reflect in the price of food if tipping was stopped

As someone from America who worked in restaurants for 11 years - we don't disagree. Tipping culture is dumb as can be and needs to be stopped from a governmental policy standpoint because workers sure don't have the power to change it.
i used to be an american server and i agree. its dumb af but these greedy ass corporations can't raise up the prices of their food so they pay me 2 an hour ($0 after taxes ofc)
yeah its $2.13 for pretty much servers everywhere no matter the city state cost of living etc.
our whole salary is based purely off tips and its stupid. either just eliminate tipping or enforce auto-gratuity (essentially the same as bumping up the price on food)

if you dont tip, youre a pretty bad person because a lot of these people rely on tips for a liveable wage because employers dont pay them enough knowing this
I've never met someone that actually likes tipping culture, it's a structural issue that some states have addressed but our government is definitely not going to do anything about it rn
I've read some American waiter workers arguing that they earn/can earn more with tipping system and if it was taken away for higher base salary then many would lose money, and that is the reason why they wouldn't want it. Then these same people complained about people not tipping. Can't have it both ways. Obviously this was only some random people and not every waiter worker.
the restaurant i work at pays me above min wage (in california) so thank god i dont really need to rely on tips, but i sure do love them

Not a consumer's job to pay them cause they making less. Tipping isnt wrong in itself but forcing to pay tips is wrong
