isn't it really fuckin weird when people start calling players by their first name instead of their ign? like why is this only a thing in val esports I've never seen this in any other game

Players themselves call pros by their first name... some prior to being "players"

I don't hate that because they know each other and are in the same job, but when its random people online its so weird

please i really want to understand why it's so weird, I personally don't do it cause I just don't care but I never heard any pro complaining about being called by their name and I don't see people often calling them by their first name, and for example Ilya or JJ or Jason are used just cause FNS made it like a second way to call them but I don't really see how it is "so fucking weird", they literally have it in their bio and are professional players

because it isn't the name they go by online, they have an ign for a reason. it makes it more personal and many people use it as a way to feel connected to the players on a deeper level, heavily parasocial and really weird. it's the same thing with youtubers, not exclusive to val pro players but it is the only esport I've seen this be a thing. just because FNS, a guy with actual personal connections to the players, uses it doesn't mean people online who have never met or spoken to them should

Valo is the only esports I watch (and chess if you count that) so I don't know the others and I am more used to actual sports so for me their name is just another way to call them, I get casters during the game should call them by their ign cause otherwise then yes it would be weird but I really don't get the extreme weirdness elsewhere like it's not invading their privacy or anything else it's just their name, maybe that's just me tho

How do they inherently "know eachother" Oxy for example had been calling Tenz "tyson" since before he was even in tier 1 playing against him... because hes a fan... what does them being in the same job actually mean?

depends on how effective the team content is
content humanizes the players and makes the fans feel closer to them
its not really weird, their names are all public information
