Just downloaded it. My game is now only 24.6 gb, I'm getting 40% more FPS and shadows look crazy good. What a day to live in the Americas and getting to try it already

can someone who knows computers explain how an update that added stuff somehow made the game smaller

that's just like so cool to me but i have no idea how it works

not a computer guy, but I'm pretty sure they replaced the games mb with this new update.
I could be wrong tho

But the newest still have old stuff like agent, map, skin
Can someone explain why the sixe get smaller when the game stuff is still same?

its a more optimized engine, they got rid of a lot of unnecessary code/data and it runs on a more streamlined engine

They added more stuff but they removed even more stuff

It totally depends on how the engine maintaines it's file structure, the size of the binaries after building the game, the size of the textures and ofcourse optimisations done by the Riot devs as to which parts of the binaries aren't required. A lot of things contribute to it.

that actually makes sense, the textures and 2D sprites were probably optimized.

Saw your comment, don't know much about game dev, so was insightful, specifically the bundled render call part. My comment was more from the perspective of appbuilding and devops where we encounter size related problem statements daily.

ofc ofc, your comment actually made alot of sense too.

Okay so people are yapping here, I will clean it up for you. Basically all that is happening is something called addressables, where instead of images and game assets being separate assets, they are clubbed together and rendered as one object, and they share 1 singular metadata and properties. This is why Valorant's file size dropped by more than half after the UE4 to UE5 upgrade, the new engine's asset bundling system removes massive amounts of redundant data that was previously duplicated across individual asset files. So there is a huge change in the storage of assets, where the new addressable system consolidates what used to be hundreds of separate files with their own headers and metadata into optimized bundles, dramatically reducing the overall size.

And there is also a thing called draw calls, where based on the number of individual assets being rendered, and the amount of computation that is taking up, here if we have the new addressable changes, since the assets are bundled together, they have a single render call and they will use less amount of compute, so this why the FPS is soo much better.

I will make a post about this soo more people can understand the awesome world of Game Dev

(i am a game dev, so that is why i yap so much)

and a few other optimizations done to decrease the file size aswell, so this is just one of the technique they probably used

i wanted to ask something. i put my game for update just now and it is about 0.5gb/21 rn. i went to file explorer checked the properties for the complete rito games folder (has riot client and valorant as the two folders inside it) and it was only 4.68gb. how tf is that possible. is it that the prev data was cleaned completely when i began installation of the ue5 update ?? and no checking it again at 1.2/21gb and it says the rito games folder is now 10.5 gb . how does that work

could be something where the engine is installing the dependencies first, so maybe the platform not picking up on that, do tell me the folder size once installation is done.

yes i'll do so, thank you. but why would the size go down as low as 4.68 gb. the only thing i can think of is the client clearing older files and then reinstalling things. which is why even at the start of the installation it went that low. 4.68 is pretty crazy

yeah they probably doing that, once you are giving such a big update, you do have to clear the old files, because if you dont, and there are exceptions, and they go in a loop, your pc/laptop will crash, and the files might corrupt, so when there is a fundamental change to the game itself, they don't stack the update, they replace the entire game files

I mean I do like the update the game feels smoother, but I was kind of hoping they would get rid of the issue where sometimes wireless accessories cause the game to stutter with the update but it still feels like its there sadly

If anyone getting any issues then update the nvidia drivers to 577.00. Am getting 10% better average fps. The weird part is the game feels a bit choppy and jumpy... Maybe it's the nvidia config.
