Although today's coins don't have precious metals , earlier coins used to have . So coin clipping was on the rise where people would just scrape/clip a tiny bit metal. The ridges prevent it because the was less metal to clip and making those ridges again after clipping took a lot of effort so it was very less profitable . Modern coins don't have precious metals but it's still done as tradition, helps visual impaired persons and makes harder to counterfeit it .
