My new closest friend in college is Muslim and is practicing (celebrating?) Ramadan. Any tips for a person who is not practicing who spends a lot of time with them to make their lives easier/not harder this month?
Would be much appreciated thank you

not eating or drinking water when you're around them while they are fasting would be great

try not to drink/eat infront of them, or leave water bottles out in plain view etc. Just don't be weird about it with them, like don't act like they are dealing with a hardship during this time. Most see it as an opportunity to exercise their faith, so the challenge is welcome.

Honestly just ask your friend about it, ask what he individually wants. Would be a good opportunity to show that you care about him and his wellbeing.

yea im just speaking from my own anecdotal experience as a non-muslim with lots of muslim friends. Quite a few of my friends don't like when people eat/drink near them, but a couple didn't mind so I just don't do it out of respect for those who don't.

Thats why I said to talk to his friend as its gonna be specific to the individual, but from my experience its just easier to not do it in front of them.

  1. You shouldn't change for him, but for yourself, if u think the way you act/live is not the "right" way.
  2. Drinking/eating next to someone, who is fasting is fine. The easiest part while fasting is not eating/drinking. But don't make fun of it and eat like right in his face or like loud to annoy. Basically don't be a douchebag about it.
  3. Fasting is 10% about food/water, Rest is mental, good deeds (giving away food, money, helping in general), prayers, watching your mouth, not thinking/doing sinful stuff. Controlling yourself, your desires
  4. After doing this for a month, the point is to keep doing it for the other 11 months, without the not eating/drinking part, but also never wasting food and appreciating it.
  5. Since u don't eat drink for long time, u go to the restroom less. This means, you have more time for important stuff and be productive for longer.
  6. Don't sleep ur fasting

I never leave a tiny pixel of food on my plate

there's a culture for indonesian muslim called bukber or buka bersama that's basically means breaking the fast together with our friends or family. but sometimes we also bring our non-muslim friends when breaking the fast as if it is just a normal dinner for them. i think you can take your friend to a dinner whenever he/she break the fast because i personally feel a lot happier if someone take me to break the fast together rather than doing it alone.

best dinner I ever had was with my friend and his family when they were breaking the fast. His mum cooked up some amazing dishes, I have no idea what I ate (i am very white lmao) but it was so good.

bro believe me a muslim tends to make the best meal of their life when it comes to preparing iftar (breaking the fast) food because it is said that the enjoyment from the person who ate the food are gonna make the person who cooked it to be rewarded in jannah (heaven)
