i think even with a common enemy to unite us all wed still fight eachother even in the face of extermination
yall are bums, racism is absolutely one of the biggest problems if everyone's hating each other over their appearance it's gonna make solving every other problem way harder. we gotta learn to coexist first

No it’s the fact that 9 people in the world have the power to destroy the planet with a button

Son i doubt a homeless guy struggling to feed himself is primarily worried about racism

Including the fact that most of them don’t understand the gravity of them having that kind of power

its not that one directional as youre making it seem, youre just assuming racism is seperate from survival

you are right; all major problems in the world are inherently interconnected. collective action against the cause(s) of those problems is necessary, and racism (and any other type of division) is an obstacle to that

I always wondered how widespread the opinion of capitalism being a core issue of humanity is, I assumed that it was pretty niche (coming from reddit), but glad to see that if people on fucking vlr think that then there's gotta be a lot of people who think that.
Racism is a side product of general systemic injustice. Not minimizing it in any way; it's a humongous issue. But it's a piece of the bigger puzzle of being turned against each other. By who? Not to get too political, but by the people who benefit from it the most. And that usually happens to involve money.
If you think hard enough about why bad things exist on Earth you'll always come back to this point.
the economy system is questionable
rich gets richer
poor gets poorer
rich hates poor (or vise versa)
taxes... they're way more harmful than "good"
i mean even in vlr a human is judged by flag and flair lmao

edit: im naive for assuming people on fucking VLR would understand the semantics without me having to explain further

The thing about taxes is in an ideal (not likely) society, the government is benevolent and spends tax money bettering the lives of people.
Take Scandinavia for example (this is off the top of my head so sorry if this is inaccurate): they have pretty high tax rates but also good health care, paid leave, infrastructure maintenance in public places, etc.
On the other hand, some Americans have relatively low tax rates but still end up paying a lot through high medical bills, insurance, student loan debt, etc.
But your other points are right, the whole system is a positive (negative? idk) feedback loop, and racism happens to be a byproduct of that, where developing countries cannot improve the same way developed countries did during the Industrial Revolution and the post-war boom.

all the systems which work at scale have capitalist cores, even the ones that allow for extensive government intervention. let's leave theorising about the economy to the econ majors

There's way more nuance than insisting that everything that works is capitalist. Firstly in this context the bad effects of capitalism are realized when it's left too unchecked. A market economy and a wage system is not what is being critiqued. It's the fact that certain people are essentially allowed to get unlimited wealth, and the fact that that wealth comes with a lot of power. No one should have that much power, and therefore that much money. This isn't people talking out of jealousy. It's almost objectively bad for that level of inequality to exist.
We are after all just a bunch of idiots on VLR but no reason discussion like this should be limited to people in econ. I'm certainly not proposing any specific solutions. Just describing the problem that objectively exists.

Yeah this, the global system of capital perpetuates these issues and makes them impossible to fully solve. It's the same with people saying food, water, and shelter, as long as those are a commodity to be sold then there will always be haves and have nots, and it can never truly be solved

nothing you've said here even refutes my point. hardcore nerds like the Austrians will tell you unchecked wealth is not even a failure of the system, and I don't really agree with that.
I do not think capitalism is perfect, and I think government intervention is a pragmatic method of implementing wealth redistribution. The statement made here simply too broad reaching, likely some marxist nonsense, no larp

Listen I've worked 12 hours a day for 100 Egyptian pounds which is less than 2 dollars and barely enough to buy a couple of kilos of tomatoes. I worked alongside a man with three kids earning the same wage and to this day I have no idea how he managed to keep his family alive. I've seen people fight over money and I've seen people eating from trash because they couldn't afford food. When you've witnessed that level of poverty it's hard to see racism as the biggest problem in the world. If someone gets treated unfairly because of their race that's wrong but I've seen people whose biggest concern isn't discrimination it's whether they'll have anything to eat tomorrow its genuinely impossible to use common sense against retards on vlr
MrBlooBloom [#15]Biggest issue is capitalism which racism is fundamentally related to
truth nuke
guuz [#34]most of the hunger and water crises are highkey from centuries of racism
I'd say it comes more from greed and corruption than racism.

What is your point then? The original point was capitalism is a fundamental issue. You said all systems that work are capitalist, and you implied that that meant capitalism wasnt the fundamental issue. I'm further specifying that when taken to the extreme, capitalism is indeed the fundamental issue.
I agree with you that it's imperfect, and that intervention is necessary and often beneficial. I don't really think we're disagreeing on anything here and I apologize if my communication was unclear earlier.

There are no functional economic systems utilizing the labor theory of value. even newer iterations of "democratic socialism" or whatever that is
I implied that capitalist principles are at the core of everything that works, so it is not infact the "fundamental issue", just implementation differences

While i do agree that a person going through that would basically be subconsciously worried about survival rather than racism being the biggest problem, my point is that racism is still a root cause of a lot of the issues we’re facing around the world. all major problems are inherently interconnected, and segregation amongst ourselves is an obstacle to tackling them
im not calling you out for anything, but you’re just repeating the same point without seeing it from a slightly broader perspective
