I now have some idea of what I'm doing. maybe?????

https://www.vlr.gg/481289/help-a-pc-building-noob/#42

I made this list for a budget pc for mainly val and cs2, nothing else super beefy. Maybe some portal and subnautica, but that's it. Any other game I play, a potato can run and I don't plan on playing triple AAA games in the future. i dunno what those even are.

BUT pls if your time allows... send me any advice or tips on my build!!!! Things that are good, things that are bad, since I generally don't understand the reasoning. Chatgpt helped with the list ofc. but anyways thank you :>

i think maybe you should look in to finding a better/newer cpu, since the one you've selected is AM4, if you want to upgrade it down the line you'd have to replace the motherboard, ram and maybe PSU

The CPU is also most responsible for your frames in games like Val and CS2, so I would suggest if you have a fixed budget maybe consider compromising on other things (likely your GPU) to upgrade your CPU

what is the timeline for upgrades usually? like 5-10 yrs? If I'm satisfied with the performance I have now, can I just buy the same cpu once it reaches the end of its warranty? Since I don't plan on playing beefy games in the future... how many years down the line for new games will the 5700 cover?? maybe... like 7 yrs? ig at that point I would be making more money but idrk.

usually it depends, i like to upgrade every 5 years or so but you can get away with longer if you have the right parts

the thing is also the 7 5700 is kind of just flat out not a great option if im being honest
hardware unboxed has a great video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCuVEuFIkew

I would suggest going for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, this is more expensive (basically double from what I'm seeing rn) but this is really the gold standard in gaming CPU's right now. There's also the 7 7800X3D which is the last gen version of the 9800X3D, you may find it's a bit cheaper

You'd also have to consider that games get harder to run over time, even games like Val. Around launch I would get 200-300 FPS on my old pc, but around late 2023 that became more like 150-200 FPS, since in general when they add things to the game it becomes more demanding to run (they've also announced they're moving Val to UR5 which should also increase load slightly)

Right... so based on my gaming needs for the future, I should prioritize cpu and make sure I won't have to replace the mobo?

ye get a 7600 or a 7500F brotha gives you a good cpu especially if ur playing valorant and gives u a good upgrade path with am5 later down the line

while hes at it should he get a 5090 instead of a 6600 aswell?

Get something like this,

+am5
+good GPU for competitive titles(not needing a high GPU), 16gb memory
+upgradeable pathway

+cheap

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAnTSs7yyi0 benchmark- obv the gpu is alot different but 5060ti should be about only 30% or so slower than the 3090 so yeah

16gb for memory is not enough in 2025 at all, a heavy game with chrome and discord will fill it completely. imo 32gb is the minimum in 2025

well its up to him to just bag a 100 dollar memory kit, i got mine for 98$ 32gb ddr5-6000 cl30

I think this build is very adequate and probably pretty over spec'd for what you are planning to do but I do have some changes I would make for it.

My Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tRk42x

  • I replaced the cpu from a 5700 to a 5700x because it is barely more expensive (literally $2) and on average performs better than the 5700
  • I changed the motherboard because although I am not sure what I/O you want on the back I think you were overspending on the motherboard. You can even change the one I put for a non wifi board because getting a wifi dongle for it is super easy and cheap but I put a wifi board anyway in case you didn't want to deal with it.
  • I also replaced the power supply for a generally considered more reliable power supply according to this spreadsheet where the power supply you chose had a C rating which indicates that it is good a for a low budget machine but not much else, to an A which indicates that it is good for high end builds which means that if you upgrade components you are less likely to run in to problems with the power supply

I think everything else you chose are great options especially for the value and while the upgrade path is more closed off in the fact that you would have to upgrade motherboard, cpu and ram at the same time, if you are planning on keeping this build for 5 - 10 years because as you said you don't play demanding games at all I feel that at that point you might as well upgrade those anyway with whatever the newest generation is meaning you would have to probably do that same anyway.

I really appreciate your improved parts list ToT tysmmmm

I definetley don't want to overspend, ty for pointing that out... it doesn't need to be overkill. Thanks for the insight on upgrades!!! That was my thinking... so I think I'll stick to your list ! I'll look into mobo w/ and w/o wifi. As for the psu, i'm assuming you reccomend an A rating cuz they tend to last long? I WILL CONTINUE TO UPDATE VLR ON ORDERS AND EVENTUAL BUILD.

here's a list for a good am5 system without a GPU: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HyFBWc

for gpus the used market is great in america, you can probably get a 6700xt for 200$ which is significantly superior ro the 6600

Okay!!!! are buying used gpu's friendly enough for ppl like me?? :DD

Ebay? Fb marketplace?? Amazon??

i got my 2080 from ebay and it was pretty easy and straightforward, just try to look for higher rated sellers with ebay buyer protection, also look into guides for buying used gpus on yt

the 9600x+6700xt system i linked is also hella overkill, you can probably get 600-700fps on valo and can play every single game on ultra at fullhd and even high on 1440p
