Last year RIOT did league of legends worlds swiss stage with 16 teams with 3 wins needed to advance to playoffs/knockout so idk if the number of teams mean anything

8 teams = 2 wins to qualify, 2 losses to go home
16 teams = 3 wins or 3 losses
So by extrapolation
32 teams = 4 wins or 4 losses
4 teams = 1 win or 1 lose (really it's just double elim)

this year format is unpredictable, no one knows. Rito even did match up draws LIVE.

They wanted to test out Swiss format so as to know what format the fans like for champs, so maybe they try out something new in shanghai

Altho unlikely, 12 teams can make a decent round robin stage before playoffs, given each region sends 3

Pretty sure it’s the normal masters format

GSL groups into playoffs

12 teams Swiss stage format is, theoretically, impossible to work out because you're gonna have 3 teams with 2-0 records

I assume it'll be like Tokyo, Reyjkavik 2022, Copenhagen, other 12 team masters. 1st seeds of each region go to playoffs, 2nd and 3rd seeds of each region play groups and make an 8 team playoffs. Swiss could still work, but Riot loves incentivizing teams to try to get 1st seed.

i mean yeah there's nothing wrong with getting a group bye, but i think swiss ensures the best teams make it to playoffs. 12 team swiss format (assuming playoffs is 8 teams) has 20ish games though and riot hates overlapping games, so it would be pretty rough

well since Shanghai will have 12 teams i just assumed first seeds get a bye to playoffs and the remainder 8 do a swiss stage

I have talked about the application of swiss format in Madrid before, and that has partly come true.
I think in Shanghai with 12 teams, Riot will give the 4 VCT Split 1 winners a direct spot in the Playoff, while still applying the Swiss format for the first stage with the remaining 8 teams. At least it ensures that China will still have a team in the Shanghai Playoff even though they are not worthy after their performance in Madrid.
