I'm confused on why it's a penalty. Doesn't the goalkeeper spread his limbs to make the save, the ball goes past, and then the Argentina player crashes into him? It's not like the keeper made additional movement to obstruct the striker. Messi is the GOAT tho

if the keeper didnt stop the player its a goal

The decision was a touch and go. I don't think either decision would've been right or wrong. Livaković was unlucky the decision was against him

That's the thing, for me isn't penalty, the goalkeeper cannot do anything to not save that crash

#14

Exactly...for me the important thing is that he does not initiate contact. A collision /= a foul.

#15

He had his leg out in the opposite side

#16

But that's what keepers do when they are trying to make a 1v1 save. If you watch it again, he kicks it out a bit for the save, then simply holds his postion. Alvarez then crashes into him.

stopped a goal scoring opportunity with his body, no contact made on the ball

it's a bit of a coin toss on whether or not it's called generally but I can understand the reasoning

#18

But he doesn't initiate any contact, he doesn't make a movement to stop Alvarez. He just sits there as the striker's momentum takes him into the keeper. The keeper didn't do anything illegal, yeah the collision stops Alvarez from finishing it off but that doesn't make it a foul

Alvarez alr had released the ball earlier
yellow is harsh but pen is fair imo

He slid forward into alvarez with his feet outstretched

Livakovic didnt touch the ball but took out alvarez in 1on1. that is a clear foul

#22

Not really clear to me but maybe i'm missing something. To me, a collision doesn't necessarily mean it's a foul. And the keeper doesn't do anything besides stand there widesprread and get crashed into

You are not wrong here and you made good points . ig either decsion could be right here but as i said the ball was released then player got obstructed

#26

Yeah I think it's close, just a bit unlucky for Croatia to get that called and it completely changed how the game was going

that is the point. I was a goalkeeper when i played for u18s and the rule is that if you don't touch the ball while in 1on1 situation and take out the striker, it is a pen. unless the striker boots the ball into the outer space LMAO. but yea its the rule

I'm surprised so many people disagree with the penalty decision tbh. The keeper is making an attempt to make a save because he has to, but alvarez gets to the ball and the keeper has fouled him, if it was a defender in that position, having to make a last ditch challenge to stop a goal in the same circumstances and it proves to be unsuccessful, it'd be a penalty and a red card all day long. If the keeper doesn't get contact, it's got to be a foul

#25

But doesn't it matter that the keeper didn't make any movements toward/ to get in the way of the striker? He stood widespread in front of Alvarez, whose momentum took him crashing into the keeper after the ball went past. I could see if he leaned into the path of Alvarez, or if he stuck out an arm to stop him from running past, but if you watch it he literally doesn't move and the striker runs into him. For me, it's a legal collision.

Unfortunately I disagree, the keeper is in his path, the only way it wouldn't be a foul is if alvarez moves with intention to initiate contact, which he doesn't, because as you said his momentum carried him into the keeper. The keeper here is making a last ditch attempt to stop him from scoring, which is a foul. A collision like that anywhere else on the field would be a foul to the attacker

I’m sorry but I completely disagree here, the contact it’s after he took his shot, Alvarez missed and got fauled, not got fauled and then missed. It’s a completely different situation and not a penalty at all

#29

Alvarez knew all he had to do was make sure the keeper got no contact on the ball and it'd be a foul, and that's what he did. It's a clear penalty to me, and the referees seem to agree.

I’m sorry but no. That’s like if in a corner the attacker takes the header misses and then when he is falling he crashes with a defender, in what world that would be a pen? It’s literally the same case, he missed

#31

I understand your point but this is different, the keeper has made a challenge and gotten in the way of alvarez' run, it goes under impeding his run, as said by former referee Peter Walton. The focus isn't so much on the attacker, more on the fact that the keeper has made a challenge and come out second best, and that's the grounds on which the penalty was given

#33
Mortadelo

How is it different tho, now imagine the same case in the corner, attacker strikes, misses, the defender "makes a challenge" jumping late and making him fall like a second and a half after he missed, is that a pen? Also the defender got to the ball a thousand times earlier than Alvarez if he didn't trip, it's not like he could have run and gotten the ball and scored if he didn't. I just don't see it dude, but anyway Argentina played better, just sad because those things don't benefit you and are the ones people can hang onto when you win to criticize you

#35

I’d say it’s different because a corner consists of 2 players equally challenging for a ball, whereas this is a situation where a keeper makes a last ditch tackle to try and prevent a goal, and dare I say a clear goal scoring opportunity, where he goes out to win the ball where the only other outcome is him committing a foul. In a corner, not winning a header doesn’t directly result in a foul or a denial of a goal scoring opportunity. However, whether you or I are right or wrong, you’re correct in saying it impacted the game, Argentina were in complete control after that, so I can understand why some people will feel let down that a potentially wrong decision changed the game in the way it did

"and dare I say a clear goal scoring opportunity" That's exactly it tho, he did not clear shit with that crash, Alvarez had already missed and the defender already got to the ball. If the crash had affected the shot in any way then it's a clear pen, but to me that, and a fault with no ball it's the same thing cause there was no danger anymore

His forward motion that continued up until the shot/moments before the shot, that now deems his action as a challenge for the ball instead of a fair 50/50, it’s not so much about what proceeds the challenge, more about the nature of the challenge. The shot that follows is a direct consequence of Livakovic making that challenge, that’s why it’s not really been argued against by the officials. This is what I think, anyway, and hearing former referees saying similar things has only helped me agree more.
