For the same reason people still play clove, harbor, and iso, they are pretty easy to play while having a very aggressive playstyle.
atleast they have smokes, or isos shield, but gecko has nothing but a shitty version of what other characters already offer. especially as a solo initator u cant do anything with it.
I mean gecko has a way to plant spike on Site without even really entering which in ranked where there are a bunch of baiters who won't entry is quite useful, the molly is good especially since you can pick it up. And while the flash isn't great, its also not the worst ability in the game. He's really not as bad as your making him out to be.
Also sure clove has smokes, but they are also possibly the worst smokes in the game with how limited the reach are and how short they are. Also even with shield Iso is kind of bad.
ive never found a situation where u can pick up the molly, you're either using it on a retake, stopping a flood/site hit or post plant, and its not like u can just go pick it up after that. wingmans alright, but if nobodys going in with it it gets broken immediately. and the flash really is awful it gets broken in one hit. theres just so many options that are better.
Clove is ass tho ur right

he FEELS like ur doing useful stuff
sure the util is rlly weak
but to a lot of ppl just spamming util makes them feel useful
