how do I deal with getting older? I have been struggling to process that I am now 18!! I was watching your lie in april yesterday for the first time since 2019 and I distinctly remember from the first time watching it thinking about how at 11 the ages of the characters (14) were so much older than I was and that they were years away, and yet I sat in the exact same chair rewatching it thinking how being 14 was years gone by. I have left my hometown and everyone I knew and I am struggling to accept I am now an adult, I just mainly feel that I havent done enough with my time and that I shouldve enjoyed it more and made more memories.

tdlr: I am now 18 and struggling with accepting im getting older and leaving the past behind, any tips or advice?

Oh okay honestly sometimes it's better to live in the present and go through life day by day and you'll see how much you do and how far you go just try to enjoy your time

his comment says that you will feel old and that you missed out on things for the rest of your life, is that not atleast slighty sad to hear? I have no problem with aging itself its just the feelings of regret and leaving things behind are whats hard to stomach and hearing that this kind of thing comes and goes with no real solution is kinda disheartening

In my experience, doing something useful is the only thing that i found makes you feel a lot better and forget that ur actually aging: like graduating from university/phd, getting well paid job, buying a house etc.

This is gonna be hard to hear, but you just eventually get over it. There are things that ur mind can't physically keep thinking about 24/7 so they'll get moved to the back of ur mind.

The busier you get -> The less u think about useless stuff like this. Although u should just enjoy ur life, you'd rather be 30 and have lived ur life fully than 30 and still fearing 40

imo its ok to acknowledge the past and how life was then, but for me what helped was remembering that all those "core memories" that come to mind from when I was younger don't just stop happening unless you keep living in the past. you have to keep making new experiences and see things from a new perspective so that you don't get the feeling of having reached your peak in the past. you need to remember to keep making those "core memories". they don't have to be profound experiences or something dramatic, just small things that you are able to look back on and remember vividly. im sure every person has at least a handful of "core memories" but if you want to not feel sad about getting older, you need to enable more to be formed, and looking back all the time won't help with it at all. after all, If you spend all your life looking back, you will miss what's right in front of you

the biggest problem for me Is that I feel like I missed out on a lot of "core memories" during my adolescence

stop thinking about it until like 36. people will try to convince you otherwise but being an adult is fucking awesome

I just mainly feel that I havent done enough with my time and that I shouldve enjoyed it more and made more memories

then make sure you enjoy the next couple decades cause they will likely be the best years of your life. no regrets

age is just a number (for when u grow up, don’t try to twist it)

being an adult is just a kid trying to be responsible. you will get used to it at some point.

The more a rice stalk is full of grain, the lower it bends

This is a famous proverbs from my country. Simply be humble to the others. Don't get all high and mighty. Have the mindset of learning from everything and everyone around you.

And you'll survive. At least until fate says no.

Literally just turned 29 today. You eventually get over the idea that you didn't make enough memories in high school if you remember to live your life to the fullest now. Prioritize doing things that will make great long term memories for you, like saving up for a trip to place you've always wanted to go to, prioritize long term happiness over short term dopamine hits, but at the same time, don't get so sucked into the grind that you forget to have fun every now and then. Take the occasional day off of work to go do something with your friends, those can create the same type of memories as doing something such as saving up for months to go on a super special trip. If you learn to balance your short term happiness with your long term goals, you'll end up being just fine.

I didn't do this, I prioritized my short term happiness over everything and I'm somewhat paying a price for it now. Don't be like me who won't even get the chance to realize my dreams for at least another 7 years now (I wanna go live in Japan, but to do that now I need to take these next three years and actually get my life back together, and then spend a minimum of 4 years in college so I can get a job that I want in Japan)

as my goat BINI once said, "life is not a race" stop comparing your average ass to fuckin genius prodigies or olympians. you don't need to graduate by 22, get a job by 23, have kids before 40, or retire by 60. unless you're literally dying, life doesn't have a deadline. cope with it

ngl dude, like 99% of the population will feel unfulfilled and sort of aimless when their 18. Anybody that says otherwise is lying or they are some super disciplined prodigy who's had their life mapped out since they were 5, and are very much not ordinary. The sooner you let go of the idea you didn't make the most use of your time in the past, the quicker you can get to the opportunity to make the most of your life in the present. Also, considering you're 18 that probably means you're going to college, and if that's the case, make the most of that time; it's probably the last phase of your life you won't totally be swamped with other responsibilities like juggling a job, your family, and your bills, so make the most of it.

Just enjoy your college years. These next 2-3 years are the best years of your life. You have freedom in your life, don't have to rely on your parents for every decision, make good career choices, find good friends circle.
Don't overthink it but don't waste yourself otherwise you'll end up doing a 12 hour night shift for pennies like me.

im 20.

its all good bro. do your best to live life to the fullest. dont be scared to make mistakes. improve a little every day. stay locked in on your goals. everyone is getting older, everyone goes through the fear of getting older, and everyone comes out the other side of those feelings with a clearer view of life.

keep it pushing. wish you the best.

the older you get the easier you deal with things. Emotions, problems, day to day life.

Regardless of the effort you put in, you're gonna get better at this whole being human thing.
