well not the entire country. it's not a "new year" per se for indians as the indian calendar actually changes on 19th march. but the government gives out an easy way out by using the gregorian calendar and calls these christmas-new year holidays as "winter vacations"
almost every season has a vacation.
10 days during monsoons, 2 months during summers, 20 days during winters, 10 days dring fall and lastly spring is generally a holiday time because that's the time when examinations end
