Brazilian explaining the emoji situation

Brazil has a long history with racism in FPS games, especially since the CS:GO era. For years, Brazilian players were repeatedly called “monkeys” in matches. Regardless of skin color, this is deeply offensive to us because our country has suffered from racism since its origins. When foreign players use the word “monkey” against Brazilians, it feels like they are treating us as subhuman while also being openly racist. Brazil is a mixed-race nation, and attacking us with this kind of slur goes against everything we are as a people.

It may be a misunderstanding, but it is still offensive to us, Coincidences like this are hard to believe, but they can happen, I dont deny that, this kind of insult is something Brazilians experience often, and that’s why it’s offensive, regardless of the intention. So even if she didn’t mean anything by sending a monkey emoji, it still hit a place that is already hurt.

thanks for putting this in such a rational clear explanation. people say "it's just an emoji" and completely ignore the historical context behind it, like we are irrational beans.

i don't doubt she didn't mean to be racist, but, as you said, it hits a spot that is already hurt

It should be as clear as water, we're in 2025 (almost 2026) and people pretend to be ignorant about that stuff. When the brazilian R6 player used that nuke gif to talk about his next match against a japanese team, the brazilian community also complained and said that he should be careful about what he posts about it, 'cuz there's no "I didn't know the context behind this nuke gif and the japanese society" in 2025, everybody knows it, but in Brazil the term "nuke/bomb" is used to say that the game will be a "banger", even so the majority of the brazilian community complained about it.

How do you live in Europe, the continent that STARTED all of it while colonizing others countries, in the century of INFORMATION, and pretend to not know about it? like cmon 'mate...

thanks. that's exactly that.

we need to hold our community accountable and have higher standards. as a brazilian, it was very embarrassing for me what this R6 player did and i am sorry it happened. Hiroshima and Nagasaki's history with a nuke is not a laughable piece of history and i can't imagine how it feels but i think it still hurts to this day.

I'm glad you know he do not represent us and that many of us found his attitude horrible

And that brazilian R6 player was either a liar or stupid, we all study the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki here since primary school, our kids even do little plays and sing sad songs about it.
That "I didn't know the context behind this nuke gif and the japanese society" was an absolute lie.

Let's be real, I'm pretty sure being called a monkey is an insult in most country. Regardless of brazil. (Although it make sense in this context anyway)

Except no one called anyone that. So that feeling just comes from a place of desperately wanting to be a victim this applies to the majority of races. And in that desperate insecure victim complex many blindly hate and harassed someone over a emoji. And anyone even associated with that person because why not.

And emoji can be used in a malicious and racist way such as the founder of G2 whos homophobic, sexist, transphobic and a all around shit human being. However that clearly wasn't the way it was used by amy. To the point where I've seen people relate simply using this emoji REGARDLESS of the context to saying the N word. Its actually unbelievably disgusting.

I understand where it's coming from, but I think some people are dragging it out too much now. Even I wonder what was going through her head when she added that emoji but given that Amy has otherwise never done anything racist, I feel like she deserves the benefit of doubt that she didn't mean to hurt anyone. She already acknowledged the harm and apologized for messing up.

At this point, it feels like people are more interested in having someone to make fun of than in her actually learning anything from the situation.

Everyone knows the racial context with using monkey with brazilians, and how brazilians react to that. Amy was naive on using it because that is a open wound on brazilians. That's it.

Everyone is really a lot of people, but she's an esports player, she lives like half of her life online and is inserted in a context where she definitely knows about that shit. Also, posting it right after losing to a brazilian team and having an upcoming match against another brazilian team is sus asf lol

Everyone in brazil knows the racial context......

No one outside of brazil gives a fuck about you.

If she knew what the emoji meant do you think she'd post a tweet openly being racist towards her opponents?

Context is even crazier this is an Asian 18 year old kid who competes in game changers a scene that promotes inclusivity? I am sure she'd probably be transphobic than racist if she wanted to get into their heads? a simple 🍆 would do more damage don't you think?

Lets think for once.

Ignoring context doesn’t work. People carry their own history and emotional baggage, and asking them to “just ignore it” only makes it look like you’re invalidating their experience. Brazilians do get heated — we’re emotional, we defend our honor and our country, and sometimes we go a bit too far when joking or making memes. But most of the time, the edits and jokes are exactly that: jokes, not organized hate.

So when something touches a wound that’s already sensitive for Brazilians, even if it wasn’t intentional, the reaction comes from that place. It’s not about attacking the player personally — it’s about how the situation feels to people who have lived with this kind of offense repeatedly. Context matters for everyone, not just for one side.
