I have no idea why people are riled up over a monkey emoji...As someone from completely the other side of the world someone please tell me why and how is it offensive in any way shape or form?

its quite simple

amy is calling srn a monkey/gorilla

monkey is a derogatory term for brasilians

it also means "A naughty or mischievous person", and if you really want to make it about race, it's mostly used for black people

Ah I see
But how was it towards srn? Am I missing something other than just that tweet?

I looked up and all I understood was it was equivalent to the n word and it didn't make sense to me in this context that's why I asked 🤷🏻

n-word still offensive in any context, same as the monkey emoji 😘

#35

Yea well then why do we have it as an emoji? I don't think an emoji is completely equivalent to a word. If it was targeted I get it but what if somebody uses it elsewhere in a different context..that wouldn't be offensive would it?But the n-word is considered offensive in any context as a word imo.

Again...I didn't know the complete meaning behind it and now I do...somehow this thread hit the smarter side of vlr XD

Monkey is used interchangeably with the nword when referring to black Brazilian people by racist LATAM and EU folk (especially in futbol)

every single person on MIBR and TLV have lighter skin than Amy tho so is this really the reason lmao

Idk I genuinely feel like she didn't know tho...feel like an awful coincidence really but I get why people are mad.

That is the case 99% of the tweet she not realised the consequences of the emoji

I’m not gonna pretend that I know Amy’s intentions, but I can also understand why Brazilians are mad

call someone a monkey is the Brazilian N word

i think it's hard when people from Europe claims ignorance over this when there were MANY episodes of racism on European football leagues involving brazilian players having bananas throwed at them over the years and it's always on the news when it happens

Ty and yea I don't follow those things usually so I didn't know.

#20

Bro people dont throw bananas at them because they are Brazilian they throw bananas at them because they are black, the word monkey is used racially against black people and not brazilian people

#25
Uncleben

Frags

Brazil has a larger population of black and mixed people compared to many of the other LATAM countries as a result of the transatlantic slave trade so racism affects more of Brazilians population in total, to the point it kinda is just offensive to Brazilian people in general

People being racist towards American or UK black people wouldn’t throw bananas for an example

#32

That last line makes you seem hella out of touch, Black people in the UK and US definitely face racism related to being compared to monkeys, what??

#36
Uncleben

Frags

The default way people are racist to black Americans and black British people would be related to other stereotypes or the calling them the n word
The default way people are racist towards black Brazilians are calling them monkeys/throwijg bananas etc
Didn’t say that they don’t face racism for comparisons to monkeys in us/uk either

#29

yeah i know. but latinos face racism as well when we go to lots of north hemisphere countries, so it's weird

but Amy's not white and i don't doubt she didn't mean it. I'm just offering context why it's so offensive to us

i think i get maybe why people were offended but at the same time if everyone knows what a monkey emoji denoted, why would she hit send on that tweet in the first place. So its likely she didnt actually mean it, like i refuse to believe anyone is that dumb

like i see players trying to make a temporary villain persona, its usually a lot more explicit and harmless

#22

although she never used that emoji before on her twitter, which makes the timing very weird, i don't doubt she didn't mean it. but the things Carlos said we're horrible and unforgivable (but it's not news to anyone that he's a POS)

Could it be related to how sRN celebrated? Smashing your fists against your chest is what gorillas do on a daily basis,
Idk when it was said nor do I care but it does seem like it sRN embodies it atleast partially
