What actually went wrong for G2?

There will always be hundreds of factors one can point to when a team loses. But for me, it has to be Jawgemo’s underwhelming performance.

History has always shown that to win a tournament, you don’t just need a well-balanced team—you need a star who can consistently put up numbers. And not just numbers, but also bring firepower to the table.

The reason G2 lost in 2024 was that, while they were a good team, they lacked firepower. All players performed well, but there was no star to carry the troops. G2 signed Jawgemo to increase their firepower, and he was a clear upgrade over Icy. Jawgemo does provide firepower, but I believe he is more of a movement player who thrives in chaos and creating it.

Jawgemo was the 16th-rated player at Masters Bangkok, 26th at Toronto, and is currently 25th at Champs. While he has carried on certain maps, on many occasions, (he only went +ve on 2/8 occasions, when G2 lo,st), he let the team down. Players like 2022 Yay, 2023 Demon1, and 2024 KK not only carried games but also performed decently even on their bad days. Firepower without consistency is of no use—just look at GX Ara.

In 2026, I expect G2 to focus on increasing their firepower. They should probably replace JonahP with a cracked duelist like oxy, Derke, or Zekken, and let Jawgemo play more flexible roles.

Changes are not always the answer

But apart from change, what can u correct after not winning int whole year? In their world, they are playing perfect Valorant and were confident. There is no way G2 goes with the same roaster in 2026.

In their world, they are playing perfect Valorant and were confident

And that's the problem... they have a very concrete belief in how the game should be played despite being proven wrong at every international by teams who are supposedly less perfect

They may get a lot of rounds from safe plays but they rarely go for the "KK guardian 4k" plays (nor do they run the comps to enable such) that every champs winner needs to push them over the line

no team is ever guaranteed to win, no matter how strong they look on paper. Being patient is worth it for the right core of players

he and valyn are the only preforming guys in this team

jawgemo inconsistency is an issue but not the main problem, their approach to the game compared to most other teams is what’s hurting them

Thanks to insane map 1. That's my whole point. One map he carries u like Thanos, another map he just pulls 2xFns nos.

map 2 was rough but he 2nd fragged the decider with 5/1 on FK/FD. not much you can do when theres two bots in your team (l0af and jonahpiss)

I think the problem is that they win most of the less important moments but lose a lot of the important ones. For example, if the score is something 4-2 they’ll more often make a great individual play to push it to 5-2. However, if it’s 11-11, they’ll almost always be on the receiving side of a great individual play. When the score gets close and the pressure gets higher, they often don’t capitalize and make individual magic.

I think there have been a lot of occasions when they bounced from deficit to close games. They are 1 of the best teams under pressure.

On one hand I agree, but on the other hand a lot of their losses were them arguably playing better but just losing all the big moments. Against T1 in Bangkok they had several opportunities to close out and couldn’t make any plays, and against PRX in Toronto they lost the key swing rounds. Even against PRX in champs they lost several huge rounds just from getting diffed by an opponent individually.

losing in Bangkok and Toronto already shows the problem, they play way too safe

JonahPdiddy and 1singularleafblower disaster classes going unnoticed for “jawgemo” Leaf was literally a sell out in map 5 at Bangkok while jawgemo was trying his hardest

Jawgemo is very inconsistent and I think he’s pretty overrated. But he’s definitely not holding them back. It’s hard to criticize g2 imo. Other than bind they didn’t really do anything wrong. Just losing gun fights DRX getting timings and like very minor decision mistakes that will always happen for any player. Both teams played well. DRX just edged it out and played better. Again minus bind. They got owned on bind.

Nah it’s pretty easy, shitty comps, leaf in big games, and valyn/joshrt vs an aggressive team

-VETO from G2 was atrocious yesterday not sure how they drafted up the VETOs before it happened but this was ridiculous to see which maps actually got played.
-Feels like these players were over-confident that they could actually win something this year.
-Perfect Valorant or Boring Valorant whatever people want to call it just doesnt always work since when you want to play the right way everytime, teams can just learn your tendencies on your defaults and walk in your gaps that you always leave.
-They got a few of their players that just couldn't shoot back when it mattered the most and it had to be down to Valyn to save rounds for this team to not get an even more embarassing scoreline on Bind since we had G2 stock very high
-Maybe the competition in their region didn't really show them anything that they could improve on during matches or in scrims especially since they won all the regionals this yeear so they may have went underprepared as they assumed they had everything ready while other teams who placed lower like MIBR got hella prep'd for Champs.
