probably because some players had a 1 in their nickname in other esports (e.g. S1mple -> s0mple, dev1ce -> dev0ce, b1t - b0t), just ruins the feeling of the nickname and 1 standing for superiority being replaced by a number which stands for literally nothing is demeaning. other creatives nicknames still clear, like Team Chokequid
it started with csgo i believe
s1mple had no trophies so people started calling him s0mple
and now it has carried over to val as a meme. someone correct me if i’m wrong.

I must admit, they are not so good as nicknames making fun of players themselves, like Perfecto -> Defecto, kennyS -> PennyS, ZyWoo -> ZyPoo, apex -> APEx, cadian into comedian, just turning the nickname with 0 is actually not so funny, com into cum is peak
I'm pretty sure s1mple was the start of it, as he was the best rated player in hltv for years before getting his first major. Well, top3 player for years before getting it.
yeah, him starting to peak right before astralis and covid hit really fucked up his trophy cabinet. The GOAT FPS player for sure
bro started hitting his stride in 2016, then around 2018 he was just different.
but yeah, him starting to be in form right at the start of the astralis era was unfortunate.
honestly as a guy who followed him since 2018 (when I got into CS), this motherfucker just different, he basically shat on old gen players, inspired new gen players, waited for them to grow up ( monesy, headtrick, shiro, wonderful), mostly shat on them, left, and now has them begging for him to return. Truly goat behaviour
