guys who think valorant's viewership is low don't forget that CS was doing the same as valorant's first year without crowds all the years except for after covid
here's some examples
https://escharts.com/tournaments/csgo/faceit-major-london-2018
https://escharts.com/tournaments/csgo/eleague-major-2018
https://escharts.com/tournaments/csgo/pgl-major-krakow-2017
https://escharts.com/tournaments/csgo/eleague-major-2017

so we're chilling, this game is only gonna grow
this is no hate thread thread towards CS just to prove the doubters wrong

Fanbases matter... Look at Astralis v AVANGAR for the 2019 Berlin Major... 800k. Why?? AVANGAR had 0 support, and Astralis was looked at as boring at the time. They had a whole era of constantly winning. Same thing will happen in Valorant... FPX doesnt really have a strong fanbase. Replace FPX w/ G2 and viola instant million lol. Same goes with Paper Rex...

Just kind of how viewership works. If NaVi or FaZe doesn't make it to a GF you'll notice a steep decline in viewers because those 2 team house some popular players and they're popular orgs.

Just saying prx is one of the most popular teams. I know you dont consider them as equal but asian viewers are still counted in the viewership.

PRX are not one of the most popular teams just cause they’re Asian. This whole team came from CSGO -Jingg and they weren’t that popular. After this tournament I’m sure there popularity has increased though.

750k without brazil, spanish, japanese or sentinels fanbase. that's a W in my books. prx have fanbase all over asia(and now world too) but nothing compared to the others i have mentioned, fpx are probably one of the least clouted team, if these two teams can give such a good show, its nothing but Ws

Yeah, the problem is that prx fans(mostly asia) already sleep at this time. The timezones fuck us all. So we can't carry the viewership

Its not just about final though, you can also look at the playoff matches which had all the region except brazil and on an average viewership was around 400-450k , and the whole tournament had 317k average viewership which is kind of low considering there is not many international match up we get to see in valorant so when there is one there should be good viewership considering excitement of an international match up . on the other hand csgo , all the match up that may occur in major people probably have seen the same matchup 2-5 times before major, either in pro league or iem or any other s tier tournament. so there is just excitement of the major rather than any international matchup. this is the same reason why first masters had more viewer than any other masters. excitement of an international matchup is just wearing off.

I think people underestimate the fanbases of sentinels, g2 and liquid. They were by far the most popular teams in 2021. They basically made the viewership overblown.

i think its important to note
the finals had fpx and pprx both teams dont hav big fanbases when compared to SEN, FNC, G2etc

its bad for short term
but good for long term

but also dont think 700k is that bad tbh

It's riot problem to figure out the viewership unbalance from different region.

#16

2

it's a natural thing.

team does well -> more people from the region watch team next event

only place this hasn't held exactly true is Korean fans and DRX, but there are a lot of external factors affecting that.

#25

Yeah but my guess is because prx fans can't carry this viewership. So now 750K+ is mostly emea fans.
Since most prx fans & japan viewer is sleeping at this time,

#27
queueK

Frags

Japan still has like 100k despite being asleep it's crazy

I think a lot of them are NA/BR/LATAM fans watching to see who wins, PRX has a lot of international fans (80% of the twitter poll voted them to win vs FPX)

EMEA is probably like 20-35% imo.

there's no real reason to compare it to CS.

sports, and esports tend to have extremely dedicated fans that watch games for their teams / players for years on end. CS, having decades of fans, 100% has more viewers!

it's like Valorant's big brother. And, you can already see this happening with some teams garnering massive fanbases. M3C / Gambit had consistently high viewership despite being all the players and the team being unknown before 2021. Sentinels have a similar story. Paper Rex is currently doing the exact same thing!

#18
namblooC
5
Frags

Why not compare it to CS though? It's a direct competitor and I'm sure most people only invest a lot of time in either of the titles (both playing and watching them)

I personally enjoyed playing Valorant a lot more than csgo recently. The cs final in cologne was unmatched in terms of hype but this val final was so fun to watch and they have some insane talents that I'm sure are going to keep pushing the skill ceiling of the genre to the edge!

i meant using the comparision as an alarming indicator that the game is "dying", or as a standard it should reach immediately.

it should definitely be used as a benchmark though!

His argument is that CS is such an old game that people from different generations have played CS, they might not play CS, but many definitely still watch the game. To create such an ecosystem riot can't do anything but wait, so comparing CS viewership vs Valorant viewership isn't exactly the most accurate way to measure how valorant is doing. It's fair to say many pros/kids who play valorant right now will eventually turn into a potential viewers in the future masters event.

I think viewership for this game is healthy no need to compare to cs (they are doing very well there as well), do you guys feel tho that this game is still riding a high being that its still new as an esport and as a game and that it could drop off years from now? just curious what everyone thinks

#17

Valorant will be kept alive by Riot, they invest way too much money in Valorant for it to die

I think so to, just a little nervous because as time moves on so do people's interests, and we've seen games have massive massive popularity like overwatch lose it's popularity over time whether it be to bad updates or metas etc... But I think where its at right now is good, updates have to be good tho and riot have to make good decisions

#30
RomanKatapult

Thankfully, I don't think Riot can fuck up as hard as the OW devs did so we should be okay

#38

Overwatch and Valorant are in completely different boats IMO. the esports side of OW got cucked right as soon as it started by announcing the OWL way before the grassroots scene could really develop.

EMEA OW got completely fucked over by franchising, APAC and South America basically didn't exist (I suspect due to the game being 40 US). IIRC the Thai OWC team had to crowdfund their travel expenses to compete.

Valorant is popular casually all over the world outside of Eastern Europe. Its average twitch viewers are higher than OWs peaks ever were.

It would take an absolutely massive fuckup by RIOT to destroy the scene.

#46
symbols07

popularity is often lost in the game itself and not in the competetive scene unless someone fucks up like overwatch did. csgo does better in esports (more popular, a lot less people play cs casually and dont watch esports), same with lol(there are people for both but the esports scene is too big)

#51

Bit unfair to compare cs 2018 and val 2022. Esports and live streaming has grown a lot since than. There's a much larger market and a larger audience now compared to 2018. That's why esport viewership in popular titles are growing each year. But val is in a healthy state rn.

Also
IEM Cologne had lesser avg viewership than this masters copenhagen (https://escharts.com/tournaments/csgo/iem-cologne-2022)
Only their GF peaked at a million viewers

Cologne is a big t1 event. It's not going to be the most watched cs event, because it's t1 event with fans that are going to focus on playoffs in the arena. Better comparison is a major.

3 international events compared to 15 international t1 events. The 3 are going to get more viewers because it brings more hype. Not everyone will be willing to watch 15 grand finals in a year.

optimistic mentality from you to say the least, the fact valorant needs popular teams in order to have viewers watch the games just proves the fanbase is mostly casuals and no1 is here to watch the game itself but just watch their national teams and players they like
