Title

Mine is that 90% of ballads are just boring hit chasing and don't have a shred of sincerity to them and just seem designed in a boardroom to appeal to no one but wine mums who start ugly crying at the slightest hint of someone over singing over a royalty free piano or acoustic guitar

The only the beatles album that was actually revolutionary was Revolver everything else after that is just good or VERY good (but not game changing). Which is why they're overall overrated

revolver, rubber soul, and sgt peppers are the big 3 of revolutionary albums imo

#19

Rubber soul was not doing anything crazy. I could give you Sgt. Pepper but the only revolutionary thing it did was be a fleshed out concept album which wasnt common for its time.

#29
cirruss

Frags

sgt pepper was the precursor for most of prog and psychedelic rock that expanded in popularity in the 70s. rubber soul also did this but was more central to pop instead, both albums also brought mixed instrumentation to popularity

It was crazy for its time. Read Wikipedia "legacy" part of Rubber Soul you will see how much it influenced pretty much everything

#20

I don't even think saying the beatles are overrated in the big 2026 is an uncommon take but i think the exception that should always be glazed almost no matter what is Revolver

#21
my-dad-ate-my-toes

Frags

I wouldn't necessarily disagree that they're overrated by todays standards, but saying they weren't revolutionary beyond one album is what I think is insane

Nothing like the Beatles existed at the time, and the fact they created the pop music formula and consistently produced music over a period of time that you couldn't hear anywhere else was what made them revolutionary over their entire career. Beatlemania was a thing for a reason, they were the only thing around that sounded like the Beatles for years

anyone who still supports kanye as an artist (like: would go see his show, supports him as a person; not: merely listen to his music) is a bad person.

hes also out of the goat rapper conversation because of v0lt0re. one of the biggest falloffs ever

An IQ too high?

#39

nah thats pretty dumb imo, ceiling is way more important than putting out slop at the end of your career and his ceiling is the highest (even tho there is a couple of saving graces on vultures 2 - slide/river could pass as normal kanye songs from 10 years ago)

+the morality question in being a fan is one ive always found pretty interesting. like he's known to undergo these huge manic episodes ever since his mother died and he went off the meds and acts pretty horribly (obviously no defending acting like a nazi), but when you compare it to other major musicians, why is the line drawn at kanye?

drake is accused of being a pedo, carti beat the mother of his children, plenty of rappers are literal murderers, plenty of the leading members of some of the biggest rock bands in the world have had inappropriate relationships with children....

yes kanye's behaviour was terrible, but why is it UNIQUELY terrible?

i see your point, i also dont support those other bad people as people. publicly idolizing one of THE very worst people in history, though, is worse than unproven p*do allegations, in my opinion.

also, i think ceiling is important, but so is consistency; thats why Kendrick clears Kanye if you compare discographies. Kendrick has no misses, Kanye has too much slop to ignore at this point

#48
Castawaytwizz

Frags
+

i dont see how thats true though. i think that shouting the edgiest thing you can think of during a mental episode is bad, but at the end of the day no tangible harm came from it. he was ostracised from 99% of public life, is still banned from entering basically any first world country, and is recovering. surely it's worse to inflict actual, physical harm onto somebody, right? an action will always have more impact than an idea

also kendrick is not the person id use as my "consistency > ceiling" example as he is quite literally only in the "goat debate" if you believe ceiling is what matters. TPAB is one of the highest peaks in hiphop, GKMC is pretty good, MMATBS is okay playlist music, and everything else he has put out is actual garbage tier that i would never be caught listening to outside of maybe one song per album

#51
Wolfed
0
Frags
+

your last take there is insane bro, GKMC is TPAB level writing, and MMATBS is also good and inspired a bunch of other artists to make more introspective music (like Tyler The Creator)

for your first point; again, i see your point, it is actions that lead to direct harm. however, ideas and actions are undoubtedly connected. one always leads to the other. calling for an entire ethnicity to be wiped out, is more than just "being edgy." normalizing any hatred, including anti-semitism, which has historically always led to much despair, is not easily forgiven. spreading those ideas, as a public figure that has many die-hard fans, leads to the harmful actions that you speak of.

in any case, my real standpoint is that both are bad. neither people who spread harmful ideas, nor people who physically do harm, should deserve your support if you have a consience.

#52

I mean, the same argument can be made for every other public figure, right? Drill music can inspire murder and violence, Carti abandoning his child & beating women influences his fans to act like that, King Von rapping word-for-word recitements of his actual murders glorifies it to his fans, lil peep promoted drugs & suicide.....

The argument isn't "The way Kanye acted was good", the argument is "The way Kanye was & is treated is that he is a unique evil compared to his peers"

#59
Wolfed
0
Frags

I think that Kanye deserves exactly how he was treated, and that other people who also caused harm deserve to be treated the same way. would you agree?

2020s is the best decade for music ever

We never seen such diversity on music before. Theres great new music for everyone everywhere, theres people doing something new, theres people rewriting classic genres, etc etc. Besides everything that is happening in the world, making and producing music is more accessible than ever. Theres more bad things but if you look close enough theres a lot of good things to cover for it

Sadly most of the general public is completely disconnected from music as a whole nowadays for some reason
