What's the difference? What's the point of having an academy team that can't ascend while other teams with affiliates in tier 2 are still picking up players from theirs

It's more contract related

Most affiliate challengers teams try to ensure some sort of return if one of their players are acquired by the VCT partner team whereas you don't get that issue if you sign an academy team. It also makes sure you can pick who you want whereas with affiliate you need to cooperate with another org who might have different ideas
