Why hate yourself? If he's genuinely homophobic then he's probably not a good person. I think it's fine for him to have his own beliefs and may not necessarily 'understand' or agree with it completely, but to me a friend will support you regardless.
If you come out to him (but didn't explicitly say you liked him) and he still acted like that and couldn't put aside beliefs/cultural differences to maintain a friendship then it's simply not worth it. You are who you are, don't change for something as novel as this.
