a language barrier is one thing I feel like, because there's a practical reason for not wanting to play with someone you can't communicate with but not wanting to play with someone just because of their gender? that's just flat out wrong

True but not confirmed, Could just be because players don’t wanna play with t3 players(no offence to MeL)
Because relying on an your current team to qualify just to get a chance is unlikely for almost any player in GC. Basically, they only have one chance a year now, to prove what level they're on, and even then, the whole team has to be good for them to qualify.

Yes, but also if it wasn't for her gender she likely wouldn't have gotten a single tier 1 trial offer anyway. If she wasn't a woman likely no tier 1 team would have even looked at her way considering her achievements outside of GC.
