I was talking to my friend about Christopher Columbus, and some people just ask me not to mention his name in public, I wonder why? Any US citizen is awake to tell me

Do you not know what Christopher Columbus did?
Colonization, enslavement and practically torturing the indigenous people that were living in the americas
You can bring up Christopher Columbus lmao its not a sensitive subject
You can, but it's a hitler (idk if this site is sensitive enough for me to not say this) type of situation where they are both very controversial figures
Dudes not even close to a hitler and genghis khan did way worse. Bro just discovered some land and tried to help his people survive
Only said as in controversial, not how much.
Hitler was just the first guy that popped in my mind that's all.
And it's not like he just discovered some land, he literally wrote in his diary that those people should be good servants.
His deal with the spanish isn't an excuse for what he did. Sure, he wanted to establish some trading posts and all that crap, but it didn't work, because he didn't find much that his dealers already didn't have.
All his "noble" intentions, weren't really so noble once he set foot in the americas as he started raiding for stuff.
And it's pretty fucking sad knowing that my country is known for it's exploration of the other sides of the seas, only for it to be brutal as hell what they did to other people just because we wanted to have healthy trading relationships.
We were dominant and that's all there is to it.
Columbus did something good: he found another continent (and most likely wasn't the first one, but history makes it seem like it) and built something out of it. How he did it is not so good afterwards.
I cba to give a lesson as to why that pos was evil but i still went this far to say this.
If people wanna defend what he did just to blame it on the empires HE made a deal with, then go ahead
People are so snowflake they even forgot it wasn't christopher columbus who did the atrocities but the Empires. He simply was trying to discover an alternative path to Indian but oh well education isn't a necessity for opinions these days.
Yes, European colonization of the Americas was disastrous for the native inhabitants, but as a lifelong resident of the US, I’ve never heard anyone be scolded for mentioning the name of Christopher Columbus in public. Certainly it’s good to learn about the various consequences resulting from Columbus’ voyage, but to treat the name like it’s some kind of slur is just odd.
Are kids these days actually brainwashed to think Columbus is an evil person lmfao
