"A match-fixing scheme has emerged over the past few months among streamers and other users in ranked VALORANT matches. During a live stream by content creator Bingulz last Wednesday (11), a user known as "Profeta" or "bananabet", who is allegedly involved in match-fixing, explained how the betting system has been working in Brazilian ranked VALORANT FPS matches.
Valorant Ranked Betting System
The scheme described by the user has no connection whatsoever with Riot Games or official game systems. According to his own account, the bets are placed on foreign betting sites that use ranked matches as a tool to generate profit. The key to the scheme is to bet and then influence the outcome by deliberately playing poorly, with the only requirement being to be on the same team. According to the explanation, it all starts before the match. The player places the bet on platforms that work with dynamic odds, those that change according to the score. At the beginning of the game, the odds are usually balanced, generally around 2.0 for each side. When a team starts winning comfortably, like 7-2, the bookmaker starts treating them as the favorite, and as a result, the odds for a loss skyrocket.
It is at this moment that the manipulation happens. The player lets the team dominate the first rounds to inflate the odds and then intentionally starts trolling. Since the odds are already high, betting against their own team yields much more money. To top it off, the bets are usually placed on websites outside of Brazil, with withdrawals in cryptocurrencies, which makes it difficult to track and monitor these winnings. According to the player, many of these platforms are not even legalized in the country, and the amounts received by each of those involved in the scheme usually vary between "three and four figures per week."
Case ghoul33
The same user also cited the recent case of Guilherme "ghoul33" Aarão, a former player for 2GAME Esports, who was dismissed after accusations of manipulation of ranked matches, betting, ghosting, and boosting. According to the account given in the live stream, the pro player was one of those who profited the most from the match-fixing scheme. This practice, in this case, is the same scheme seen in other sports, such as soccer, where athletes or referees manipulate results to benefit bettors."
