Discord ID Thing

As someone with the early access version of this ID verification thing, I don't understand the complaints. I use discord every day and it hasn't affected me. Its genuinely not that bad, if you don't verify ID its just the same, but without NSFW channels. The only logical issues I kinda agree with are the risks of data breaches and the potential of discord taking it further, but you don't need to verify ur ID, so the first one can be avoided. The second reason is practically brand suicide, so that kinda makes me think that they wouldn't do that, cause once they do the community just like its currently doing, would boycott the hell out of it.

(I've read a single article about this, so if I'm missing anything mb. I'm also not an absolute gooner, maybe thats why I'm not that affected.)

It’s less about the restrictions and more so about the method of verification itself

Whats the method? The picture, and they guess ur age?

facial recognition or government ID

they claim to “delete your data” but recently suffered a data breach in october in which 70k were affected by it

Yeah I don’t understand how they are gonna verify stuff I am not early access one but had discord during one year of its release they added so much from a simple app and now this

I meant I'm early access for this new ID verification. The UK by law had discord make their citizens do all this stuff a couple months ago.

I was discussing it with a friend and the primary issue really is that there isnt really a trusted source of age verification. Essentially any third party or company that does this might store your data (even just the selfie) and word for word my friend said

"Verifying your face makes it possible for someone to find out who you are, for the governments to subpoena your identity and prosecute you for whatever they deem illegal"

If there is a trustworthy third party or company who can age-verify people i dont think anyone would have an issue with it given that it helps against scams, spams, child predation and more

Prolly because discord is clearly testing the waters. "Oh, it's only for certain channels" etc etc and plus anything that scans your face nowadays is fishy, you don't know if big techs are selling those data to anywhere man.

they already do that

You dont need to scan your face in the first place? Just don't do it. I doubt most people are using discord because of NSFW channels. So its not that big of a loss. Plus every company already sells ur data.

Bro, I'm talking about how discord is just trying shit out first before they actually fully implement it like a mandatory facial scan for everything.

That wouldn't happen. Like I said it'd be brand suicide. This is already pushing the border of comfortability, if it was mandatory discord would literally disappear.

id say its inevitable it will get breached, not a just a risk but a guarantee. already happened in just a month when they first introduced it and its going to happen again but now its going to be 100x the users if not more. i wouldnt trust their claims of not storing anything either, its exactly what they said before that breach.
so their promises of only limiting it for nsfw channels etc dont really hold much value. if they see it as a successful way to farm data, id say its likely that theyre going to lower the bar as much as they can
