huge yap but here we go (tldr at the bottom)

generally if its doing something you should be able to do but arent because you need an ai to summarize/do it for you, i would say thats over the line (depending on context). if ur using it as a glorified google search/research tool, sure thats fine.

personally i think using it to write things for you is over the line. for example, a lot of people use it to write essays, even like 250 or 500 word ones. really? are we deadass? youre using an ai instead of just doing it yourself? i dont care if its easier. i dont care if its faster. the people you are writing for want something from you. not a lifeless chatgpt response. real human shit, no clankers. (fun fact: this comment is 280 words. you can write this yourself.)

using it for research/brainstorming? sure. thats a good use of something that can scour the web in a millisecond. using it to change or better explain something (ex writing or learning) is also good. being fully dependent on it to write something or explain something to you is lazy and is shit for your brain. learning complex math equations through gpt is a good way to fail a test, as you arent learning, youre just reading and will forget in half an hour.

tldr: imo using gpt as a substitute for something important (like writing a full essay or learning something completely) is bad, and is bad for you as you become reliant on it. using it as a supplement or ease-of-access tool is good (researching, aiding learning and not just teaching it to you) is a good use of a helpful tool

I feel like this is the general consensus surrounding ai no?

considering that majority of chatgpt users are university students, no. being a college student myself, people will die protecting chatgpt in every regard before they'll admit they're just lazy. they might spit some sympathy towards the planet saying that AI emits more pollution than thing X but wont stop using it in the first place. you wont believe the begging one might have to do to get someone to tell you their actual based opinions on something

In general? Why would people make fun of you for using AI for general use?
I ask it many questions everyday and get helpful answers, nothing wrong with that

i think there's a bad stereotype that anything AI = bad nowadays, though it's probably just what i've been exposed to

personally, I'm fine if you only use it for generative text, to do your assignment, chatbot rping, or whatever, I only use AI to create flashcards for study, it's been insanely helpful for me ngl

for me, the line would be generative images and videos, mainly because the way they scrape artist's work without their consent and stuff

but then again, I don't really care/judge people for using AI, there are other worse things that people should be judged for rather than just using chatGPT imo

hot take but i think generative AI art for non-commercial stuff is whatever, like u wanna visualize something but ur too shit to do it (u cant draw / make render / design / whatever) and you dont have the time to commit urself to learning it coz its just a one off / hobby thing

as long as u dont make money off it it's green flag imo

i think it's fine for anything personal but not for anything you share with others. for example schoolwork, if teachers don't figure out a way to combat ai, it will give students an easy way to learn nothing (many of whom are too young to realize the long-term effects). this leads to a failure of education, as not everything irl can be replaced by ai. this kind of loop is already happening with computers, for example. another example is of course ai art (or ai fiction etc), which is way too easy to generate and mediocre in quality. it just takes away from the good, human art that takes much more time to draw.

another concern is ai chatbots; it is of course a personal usage and it won't affect anyone else negatively. however we've seen parasocial relationships with ai chatbots, so this is something to watch out for.

in all i think using ai is not immoral by itself, but it quickly devolves into a harmful cycle. for various x, "i use chatgpt for x" can be cooked or not, but even if it's not cooked, it can lead to being cooked very easily because of human nature

i have this perception that it lowers our standard for critical thinking because i also had this perception that before ai chatbots, we'd be more rigorous in searching for information when in reality most of us probably just accepted whatever was the first result on google, or believed whatever confirmed our expectations so im not even 100% sure in saying it lowers our critical thinking

i will say i do get personally annoyed at people on twitter who @grok for everything
