its been 4yrs now had got 65th percentile had no hope in life
5 weeks later gave Mh-Cet got 98th percentile and a good college life was been better since then
but still of the same opinion fuck these stupid tests like JEE MHCET CAT GATE and what not fuck Boards too these one dimensional stupid tests are the reason why we are so backwards compared to the rest of the world along with reservation system btw

I don't think you are ready for that then.

How are you going to test subject majors?

CS? Do you know Machine Learning? Do you know Data structures? Do you know graph theory?

Same for Electrical or literally any other branch. All that matters is problem-solving skills and JEE is enough to test it.

I agree on the part that it's not everyone's cup of tea. It should not be a life-deciding exam but questioning the relevancy of JEE is nonsense.

The only way to improve the admission to IITs might be to introduce an interview after the exam but I am sure most of the people coming from small cities will be against it cause ofc, they are not "smart" enough.

But letting you know my first-hand experience, JEE is an excellent filter (to test engineering skills) and all I would want is a personality interview to be added on top to filter out these idiots who still make it into IITs.

i suggest schools should give the children the option to do either pcm where u decide on ur major after doing pcm that you may or may not like or start learning machine learning and etc during ur 11th and 12th, it's a risk reward and in that way u don't lose the og pcm option

second suggestion is to add an extra subject for the major.. ik like many schools offer like cs(like ours) as a separate subject but the portions isn't interesting at all it's very gray and boring at times.. its a lot mark based and stuff

i do agree on problem solving ability and jee tests it but jee also removes a lot of talent
for example a child could be very good with computers, know good coding and stuff but he could be bad at either of pcm and that could ruin his life

jee however is the only exam and it would be amazing if we had like more exams not just based on pcm but like on other stidf
like cs,etc..

The CS you study in school should not even be called "Computer Science".

It should be called introduction to C++/Python heck you cannot call it "Programming" cause they are just teaching you the language and not "programming". Programming can be learnt without ever learning a language and that is usually how it's taught in universities (we never wrote a single line of code in our intro to CS course). Programming was only done in lab classes.

If you think that "Programming" or "Coding" is CS, you are in for a surprise.

In plain text - you cannot really teach "CS" without first studying hardcore PCM in 12th first.

Machine Learning is nothing but Linear Algebra which does not count your 9th-grade graphs and stuff, it includes Vector spaces matrices and other stuff. It also has a lot of probability and statistics among other things.

Also, you guys really do not value physics and chemistry as subjects. But I cannot emphasise enough that these three subjects are taught to you for a reason. I can give a few examples here -

In this year's Inter-IIT a problem statement was to analyze solar X-ray data from XSM sensors that ISRO has on the moon. It obviously required programming knowledge, but we had to go really deep into physics as well.

Also, a good friend of mine is doing a project this summer to detect droplets under a microscope in the chemistry/material science domain. You need a good knowledge of chemistry to do this.

In the 4 years, you spend studying CS you will actually be using maths, physics and in "some" instances chemistry. Maybe when you get a job you can get away from it but in academics and research at least to my experience, these things will never leave you.

Finally to your point of "a child is good with computers" does not mean he is good with CS. Programming and CS are two different things.

You don't need a 4 year CS degree to learn to program and get a job. You can learn javascript react and nodeJS and get hired as a full-stack developer in 1-2 years. It does take 4 years to become a computer engineer and get hired as a "Software Engineer" instead of a web developer.

Yeah dude i used conditional probability to know the exact amount of hours it would take for me to get out of Silver by pre setting my next game as a loss and came to the conclusion i would have a better chance of getting my seat in IIT or NIT over an SC ST with 20-30 marks less then me

dude IITs are down bad.

They are average at best engineering colleges. Honestly I won't be surprised if 50% of my batch does not have a job by the end of next year.

#35

mainly it depends on the branch like circuit branch will get most of them

#36
SnooTangerines

Frags
+

Hahahaa LMAOOO.

Nope. Barely 20% of my batch has got internships and less than 5% of them are in good companies.

We only have 4 branches in our institute and 3 out of them are core/circuit branches including CSE.

Placements stats are no better.

Let me also tell you that these is the stats of an IIT with relatively better placements where your average CTC all branches is 16LPA and for CSE is 24+LPA. In the case of other IITs its worse.

So if IITs are average, did you find any better engineering colleges in India?

Also, the situation is a lot better in older IITs than in newer IITs.

#59
SnooTangerines
0
Frags
+

Not a lot better. They are much better in some other aspects like the volume and variety of research conducted.

Also, the situation is a lot better in older IITs than in newer IITs.

Stats would say otherwise, google up some stats comparing IITJ for example with older IITs like IIT D and IITK. It's not that different or in a lot of cases even better. Don't look at the number of offers/students btw cause older IITs to have a crowd.

However, I won't say the stats paint an accurate picture. I would they are marginally better yes. I was actually offered all the IITs but I chose a subject of my interest instead of going to a larger college. That should give you an idea that the difference is not really that huge especially if placements are on your agenda.

I would go on to say that even the NITs and colleges like DTU, NSIT and some IIITs are equivalent to larger IITs in opportunities given to BTech students. Its only at a PhD level that it starts to make a difference.

did you find any better engineering colleges in India?

No. Go to a GOOD uni outside if you actually want to study stuff. If you are ready to put in enough effort and are not looking for a noble prize or a Turing award or something, IITs will suffice. But they are way below the international standards of a good university.

#72
EntryKJ

I feel like you're only looking at placements when comparing older and newer IITs. You can't really expect much when you just have a BTech, and if your whole batch puts in the required effort, they will all get placed, but they won't. I graduated from an IIT.

Yes, I know that NA and Europe have better colleges. They're also expensive (if you go to a good one). I joined for MS in the US.

Just don't say that IITs are down bad when they're among the best options you have in India (also much cheaper than the US and better ROI if you put in some work).
