like why is this tournament single elimination playoffs? and not even a bo3. this is the many reasons i always say esports > sports. better formats, more entertaining.

like how are we getting results like Switzerland 16-14 (win in OT) when colombia wouldve easily won 2-1. its so sad to see man, then once they lose, it's over just like that

like man. make it more entertaning & so we'd have more games. then in the grand finals (instead of consolation finals) the upper bracket teams could have free side selection

physical sports are much more demanding and football already has issues with too many games causing injuries and poor welfare for players. Increasing games is a bad idea given how much shorter off seasons are in football compared to esports like val or rocket league

unironically rocket league has a great system for upper/lower bracket and more games should adopt it

gives group stage performance a meaning, is mostly still single elim anyways, and doesn't need to deal with an upper bracket advantage

16 teams, 4 groups, 2 teams make it out of each group, 2 are eliminated (this is the same as valorant)

there are now 8 teams left, 4 1st seeds, 4 2nd seeds

the 4 1st seeds are placed into an upper bracket quarterfinal, the winner of this game gets placed straight into semis (top 4), and the losers are places into "lower bracket quarterfinals," or just where quarters would be in a single elim bracket

the 4 2nd seeds are placed into "lower bracket octos," and they play through the bracket like a typical single elim bracket

this way, you are given a considerable advantage for being upper bracket and winning your game (free top 4), but you are also given a failsafe for losing the upper bracket game (not being eliminated)

I think double elim is good only until we have a top 4 or top 8, but when we have a top 4/8 it's good we can go back to semifinal + final, because if we dont we have 50% chance to have a final that is a rematch in winner bracket. They are double elim format that lead to a 8 team single elim bracket that can ensure the final is the 2 best team playing each other.

For 2030 and the probable 64 team tournament, maybe we could have either a swiss or a double elim :
Round 1 : WInner 64 teams, Lower 0 teams
Round 2 : W 32T, L : 32T
Round 3 : W 16T, L : 32T
Round 4 : W 8T, L : 24T
Round 5 : W 4T, L : 16T
Round 6 : W 2T, L 10T
Round 7 : W 1T, L 6T
Round 8 : W 1T, L 4T
Round 9 : 4 Team Final (The team in the winner bracket pick their opponent)
Round 10 : 2 Team Final
