Let people drink therefore damaging their livers?
No.
I am not one to advocate for self harm.

People know alcohol damages their liver hence why most people drink in specific situations

This stupid mf thinks drinking on weekends is gonna cut someone's lifespan in half

No need to resort to petty insults to try to get your point across, it just makes the point you're making weaker.

Alcohol is a dangerous thing, it can damage lives and even families.

So what? Raw fish and even fugu taste delicious, but they can be very bad for you or even kill you.

#27

?fugu is completely harmless when cooked by the right people. Them being dangerous when being prepared by unprepared cooks is not a good reason to never eat fugu

Still, even then, there is always a risk. I should've said fent or meth.

#41

when you cross the street there is generally a risk that a car crashes into you and kills you, yet you still cross streets right? Because in this situation you are capable of reducing the odds of an incident happening by making sure that there doesn't seem to be a car nearby when crossing. That itself doesn't make it impossible for an accident to happen for a variety of reasons outside of your control, but it is enough to convince you that you can cross safely.
Well it's the same for alcohol; in most cases and for most people, they are able to control what they are doing with it in a way that makes it generally harmless. Even then, incidents can still happen ofc, but it's not a good enough reason not to drink at all

#50

but people still eat it right? same for alcohol. let's say u like eating raw fish and someone comes to your face and starts taunting u saying fried fish better or ew u are eating raw fish? obvs you would be pissed. u are eating it because u have accounted the risk so stop saying water better
we know. death is inevitable so why would i restrict myself to do something i enjoy . it's not like alcohol is going to kill me tmrw

Alcoholism is a separate mental illness and pretty much any sort of stimulant can be addictive and harmful if someone overdoes it

The average person who drinks is realistically going to be fine if they limit their drinking to social situations and their lifespan and general day to day health is largely unaffected

Let adults do what they want and stop being a puritan. You are not the only person aware that alcohol affects your health, you don't need to instantly announce it to people whenever the subject comes up online

Ok but advocating against alcohol literally every single time you see the topic online is pretentious, annoying and makes you seem like a puritanical weirdo

Imagine if every time people were talking about their favourite snacks online someone forcibly inserted themselves into the conversation to tell you that you shouldn't eat any of them and just eat vegetables instead and acted like you had zero clue that sugar could negatively impact your health

i hate to be that guy, but the more I learn about alcohol, the more glad I am to have never touched it. But also as a future health professional, I have learned that not everyone is worried about the health risks that it carries, and I can't force a change on to anyone who does not want to or is even considering it. All I will say is that when alcohol goes through your body, it does more than just damage your liver. It changes your brain function, which in turn affects other major organs, and over long periods of time, it can alter your brain physiology to make you dependent on it and can have irreversible effects (albeit after long term heavy consumption). It increases your risk of cardiac arrhythmias, even in moderate doses. It causes liver fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis, even at moderate levels as well (at a much slower rate). it also upsets your GI system too. Even moderate levels of alcohol consumption increases risk of all kinds of cancers too, not to forget the list of diseases for which alcohol consumption is a risk factor for. At the end of the day, these are all risks, not guarantees, so if you are comfortable with the costs of alcohol and if it benefits your life more than the threat of the proposed risks, then by all means go ahead and indulge in alcohol. But it isn't fair to dismiss other people just because you want the freedom without acknowledging the consequences. I know some people are going to react very negatively to this comment, because no one really wants to hear about the negatives, let alone have it shoved down their throats in spaces where they don't expect, but I think it's worth sharing the knowledge I have about these risks, and to let people make their own informed decisions about their health, including the risks of alcohol consumption of any amount. The issue is that alcohol is very socially acceptable, so people often gloss over the risks because it's something that everyone seems to indulge in. But one thing that I think is noteworthy is that if alcohol were to be discovered today as a substance, from a medical perspective, it would not be condoned as freely as it is in society now.

#36

15 ml of pure alcohol
i am not talking about a beverage

#43
midzera
0
Frags

When I looked it up, it provided that it's 12-15ml of pure alcohol. This translates to 12 fl oz of beer, 5 fl oz of wine, etc. It's also 12-15ml of pure alcohol per hour which is surprisingly fast. This is however not to say drinking alcohol does come with its risks - sure, the long-term effect of excessive drinking is cirrhosis or liver cancer, but the short-term effects are slowed reaction time, lowered inhibitions and you can't drive after having multiple drinks.

These can have secondary effects that could harm like doing something dangerous without thinking straight, doing something embarrassing that could damage your reputation or professional image or lead you to trouble.

I know my post is ending up into more of a yap, but it is wild that alcohol is pretty much the only legal drug that is widely commercialised despite having numerous drawbacks. I get that people like the taste or do it socially, but it's just some food for thought. I personally don't drink, but I don't mind if my colleagues and friends drink as long as they're being responsible.

I mean there is

The NHS states that regularly drinking more than 14 units a week is the point at which it starts to negatively impact your health

A shot is 1 unit, most pints are 2-3 units, a large glass of wine is 3 units

Mind you that's only regular consumption as well, one week occasionally where u go over this limit isn't gonna make much of a difference
