LIFE ADVICE NEEDED

my plan for the next few years was set before Monday, I graduated university this summer and was going to do an extra year to get my teaching qualifications, before I spent a few years working in England while saving up money so I could move overseas to teach English

But yesterday, a lecturer of mine contacted me and offered me a job (£23,000 salary, which is low for my industry). This got the gears turning in my head, and after some research I found a teaching course in an American school (its been an unrealistic dream of mine to study abroad) which is reasonably priced and starts in May of next year and lasts for 3 semesters.

so now I'm stuck with what direction to take my life, on the one hand I have a guaranteed offer to do my teaching qualification, with the rest of my plan to save up and move overseas being very likely to happen, it's the low-risk option. Or I can take a chance, take this job for the next 8 or so months and save up to go to America for a year. This is a dream come true for me, except that its a much riskier path (What if I don't get on the program, what if America's new border policy affects my chances of getting a visa to stay there etc.) and I'm scared that if the America plan doesn't work out then I could find myself stuck in this job and it'll be really difficult to get back into education when I'm in the working world. I know I could just delay my teaching degree for one year, but idk if its worth the hassle of possibly delaying my life for one year, plus its the fact that if I started my teaching qualification in 2026, my friends will have graduated and ill be stuck doing a job for shit pay then I'll be doing my extra degree with my friends not being there either.

Not asking anyone to choose for me, just curious as to what you guys would do in my situation

dont burn any bridges, be honest with your lecturer about your aspirations and keep your network in your home country incase shit goes sideways

but dont settle man, just by the way you typed it out I know its what you really want. you saved for the chance to take this jump dont miss your opportunity

imo get the teaching qualifications, play it safe. but then again idk how much support you have if the america job goes wrong (do you have parents to support you etc etc). i'd say play it safe but live yo life

I have a pretty good support system, my parents are supportive of me and wouldnt charge me any rent as long as I'm helping at home + helping my older family members with stuff + I dont sit around smoking weed and being a bum. It's just more that I'm worried about possibly wasting a year of my life which could be spent with friends, all for a course which has a low acceptance rate

Best thing to do is a risk assessment. Jot down your pros and cons. See where you see yourself happier. Don't care too much about your friends getting ahead in the next 3-5 years when maybe you might be in a better position 20 years down the line yfm. Just make sure whatever decision you end up making is one you fully believe in with your all your heart. Try to also take into account whether there's any immediate fiscal responsibilities thag you have and try to create two separate 5 years plans for both scenarios. I can be the one to even do as much as say what direction you should go in, but I do wish you success on wherever life ends up leading you.

I would take a chance on the job for the next 8 or so months and save up to go to America for a year.

You mention that you'd be a year behind your friends and working the job, but you'd have the experience of studying abroad that none of your friends can say they had. Those are key experiences that you can't feasibly get once you're older. Just make sure you are realistic with budgeting in America, the cost of living in cities here is absurdly high.

Not sure where the program is but I'm really familiar with anything on the East Coast if you want any more details or you wanna PM me any questions. Honestly either decision is fine for you, just make sure you prioritize what you want right now and not look 10 years in the future to an imaginary situation.
