Can someone please fill me in why some players or orgs are against participating in ewc? I have no clue regarding this.
Thanks

basically saudi arabia (ewc home country) has been sportswashing (using sports/events to give them positive media) to hide their insane amount of human trafficking and rights violations

If you want to be a moral person you should boycott VALORANT entirely, as Riot pays taxes to Israel, who as we know is currently conducting a genocide

Oil money, and the fact that the growing Saudi takeover of esports is becoming a real issue. They already own ESL and the EWC. The only counter argument to this that people have is “well other countries do bad things too”, but these orgs are directly financed and supported by the Saudi government who are responsible for a wide range of human rights violations. Their whole business model is to buy their way into esports by throwing ludicrous amounts of money at top talent. They don’t care about the scene or developing players or teams at all, it’s sports-washing.

Israel has VAT bro, when Israeli's buy skins in League and VALORANT, Riot has to pay the Israeli government taxes...

I condemn china's actions but it's not Xi who is funding the ewc and literally creating an event to spread propaganda and cover up their actions. If China's govt got actively involved in Riot's operations I would drop their games.

Tencent, a Chinese tech giant founded in 1998, has been under scrutiny for its close ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In October 2023, the Chinese government took a "golden share" in a domestic subsidiary of Tencent, indicating increased control over the tech sector by the CCP. This move suggests that Tencent's operations and financial activities may be influenced by the Chinese government's policies and goals.
Tencent's CEO and co-founder, Ma Huateng, is a member of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's national parliament, which further links the company to the CCP. Critics argue that Tencent is not independent of the CCP and serves its goals with every purchase, silence, and promotion.

he's claiming paying VAT for a purchase made in your country is the same as buying out, hosting and sinking unprofitable amounts of money into an event expressly for sportswashing

the fact that this kind of bad faith argument has to be made to even pretend to compare the two shatters their arguments pretty succinctly.
