I understand how like 15 years ago people probably vibed w it but I actually cannot sit through that slideshow of an anime

Character development refers to how much you learn about a character, character progression refers to how the characters change throughout the story. One piece has a lot of character development, whilst it doesnt have that much progression apart from some great key moments that represent the turning points for characters like marineford and enies lobby.
