it wouldn't fix the issue for sure but if they don't do it the issue will never get fixed. people already don't watch tier 2 - they're definitely not going to watch it if the TOs are awful and it shows in their production (e.g. observers being afk for a full half)

riot can also increase prizepools or offer small cash stipends as well - but that's a bandaid fix and not one that promotes long-term longevity.
i think if they can figure out a way to be flexible with sponsorship deals it would probably be the best for financial stability.

i agree that it's unrealistic to expect a livable wage whilst being a player in the tier 2 scene of an esport.

but i'm not necessarily talking about player salaries. i'm also talking about the structure of the scene - specifically the budget that TOs work with. Mr. Funhaver mentioned that his plan for the tier 2 scene was lowballed to an insane degree by some other TO that basically said their budget was a little over the prizepool - and you can tell with how shoddy production has been.

The bare minimum Riot can do for the scene is to invest some amount for decent quality TOs.

it's true that tier 2 will always be unstable and that even riot can't afford to maintain a tier 2 scene on top of funding the partnership leagues.

but riot is cutting costs to a point where it is actively affecting the competitive and financial integrity and talent pipeline of tier 2. which i think is a step too far

Nah, FPS is pretty big in China - it's just that the games that dominate the market there aren't well-known in the West. Crossfire and PUBG are two of the top Chinese FPS games and China has won trophies in both. I think it's just that the primary focus of esports in China remains largely within League of Legends.

Regardless, Tencent is generally hands-off. I don't really think they have anything to do with how Riot runs VCT.

Tencent owns stakes in many major game companies but they keep their hands off with regard to how its run - that's just their modus operandi. They even have stake in companies like Larian, but don't do anything with them.

It's possible that Tencent may rifle through the books at the companies they have holdings in, but generally speaking just because Riot is owned by Tencent there aren't real grounds to assume they interfere with the day-to-day dealings of the company.
