Interesting. I am of the opinion that the team and coach need to be fully confident, including the 6th, that the designated main 5 is the team. I believe that is how EG operated while having the amount of potential subs they did. I don't believe the solution is having a shit 6th or no 6th.

how do you know it makes them insecure? Maybe but I would not just assume the emotions of another human based on assumptions on a job that you have never experienced. Teams do not make decisions based on what the community says unless its like a Sinatra situation. This is a coach, player, and team decision. If a player has anxiety over there being a 6th that's on the coach/team imo.
