Maybe at the beginning of the season teams starts even, then with wins or losses they gain "elo", and beating a team with a stronger record (ie if I'm 1-4 in the season and I've now just beaten a team who is 5-0 in the season, I would get more "elo" than if I had just beaten another team who was 3-2 in the season.

It is quite a linear way of approaching it but it is a rough way of making it work.
