I would put it not as talent but rather predetermination, at least in terms of sport. Wembanyama is a talent, but he has a predetermined buff compared to any other athlete due to the height. Messi is undoubtedly talented, but his dribbling is so good because he has such a low center of gravity. Magnus Carlsen is a genius in chess, but he was born with a high IQ. Same goes for reactions, body builds, mentality, focus, etc. etc etc. Some people are just born in a way that if they find their work/sport they will have an edge over the field due to some sort of thing they inherited. At least that's my opinion. Obviously working hard is also required to reach the very top, but sports know plenty of examples where players had terrible work ethic but still could put on an absolute brutal display of talent diff

But can a brutally hard working guy be better than a true prodigy like messi?

Depends on if the prodigy is lazy or no. If the prodigy is at least 50% as hard working as the guy with no talent, I highly doubt that. Some things are just OP

but messi even if he plays at his 50% capacity is better than 90% of the players that is greatness, maybe cant be achieved through hard work

greatness can be achieved through hard work, plenty of examples in sport. The thing is that most of the guys still had some sorta predetermination or what others call talent. I feel like there is no right or wrong answer in terms of ''hard work or talent'', because it depends purely on the field you choose, the person who has the most talent in the field and who his biggest rival is (because you need a merit to understand how much better the talent is). Some sports it's less (e.g. all esports imo, talent is not as strong as in true sports. Exhibit A: tenz in cs. All the talent in the world, but he wasn't nearly as good as for example elige), some sports it's everything (you are at a huge handicap in the NBA if you are short). Imo the answer is somewhere in the middle and it depends on the volume of talent certain individuals have and the talent a hard worker has, if that kinda makes sense :D For example, to say that Ronaldo is only a hard worker and had no talent is nonsense, the guy is an absolute freak of nature in talent as well. To say that messi is just a genius and doesn't train is also false. in Anime or series or movies, yeah you can have 0% talent 100% hard work or 100% talent 0% hard work characters, but not in real life. There is no correct answer because everyone views talent, hard work and everything around sports differently

Hard work and talent each only take you so far. For example in NA Valorant terms, Shot_Up is a great example of a player with talent but not hard work, Governor is an example of a player with hard work but not talent, and zekken is an example of both.
